ASSISTANT PROSECUTING ATTORNEY I

The Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office is seeking an experienced attorney to join its Department of Family and Protective Services Unit (DFPS). This position represents DFPS in legal proceedings involving the safety, permanency, and well‑being of children and families. The attorney will review and present removal affidavits and emergency orders, prepare witnesses for hearings and trials, litigate contested matters, and advocate for permanency plans that serve the best interests of children. Additional responsibilities include conducting case intakes, developing litigation strategies, and providing legal guidance to support agency decision‑making. The ideal candidate will possess strong litigation, writing, and analytical skills, the ability to manage a high‑volume caseload, and a commitment to protecting children and strengthening families through the legal process.

Summary
The Attorney will be responsible for assisting with the daily functions of the Criminal District Attorney including prosecuting and defending criminal and civil matters in various levels of trial and appellate courts, as well as administrative forums. Responsible for rigorous enforcement of laws in an ethical, honest, and just manner, handling matters of substantial complexity and gravity. Prepares and presents cases in court; investigates facts giving rise to legal issues, drafts written documents with significant legal implications; provides sound legal advice to individual or governmental clients. Exercises independent judgment under the general supervision of senior prosecutors while continuing to develop skills, knowledge, and expertise.

Salary: $86,429.98 - $119,925.26 annually (Salary Commensurate with Experience)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Drafts and files pleadings, answers, motions, briefs, and responses necessary to conduct litigation and proceedings in related forums.

Appears in court and forums to select juries, present and cross‑examine evidence, make legal arguments, and act as an advocate.

Identifies, locates, and prepares witnesses to present testimony effectively in court or related forums.

Counsels and advises clients within the bounds of confidentiality, when applicable, regarding legal issues in all phases of litigation and in non‑adversarial contexts.

Identifies and prepares non‑testimonial forms of evidence for use in court and related forums.

Drafts legal instruments and documents with legal implications.

Negotiates with others to settle litigation or other contested matters or to assist in solving problems with legal implications.

Conducts and supervises investigations in civil and criminal discovery proceedings.

Develops knowledge, skill, and expertise in applicable areas of law to keep pace with current developments.

Strives to enhance experience, knowledge and skills.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Good working knowledge and understanding of and ability to apply the applicable laws, procedures, case holdings, and departmental policies is essential.

Ability to work efficiently and effectively in high‑pressure situations and ability to communicate effectively is required.

Possesses analytical ability, is diplomatic and tactful, and uses good judgment and common sense.

Possesses proficient verbal and written skills to communicate information and directions to courts, attorneys, investigators, police agencies, and citizens.

Attorney is responsible for working in a cooperative manner with support staff and investigators.

Attorney must be computer literate.

Competency with computers and Microsoft Office 365 Suite.

Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment. Must be able to stay organized and know how to prioritize the workload.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Advanced analytical skills.

Minimum Requirements

Juris Doctorate degree required.

Must be licensed to practice law and be a member in good standing of the State Bar of Texas. Prior experience in the relevant area of law is not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment & Other Requirements
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent may be required to bend, hear, keyboard, sit, stand, talk, work alone and with others, and work overtime. Must be able to lift up to 25lbs.

Decision Making
This attorney exercises appropriate professional discretion and independence under the close supervision of more experienced attorneys. This position carries no policy making power.

This attorney interacts with departmental supervisors and peers, other County employees, outside vendors, state agencies, witnesses, clients, judges, and opposing counsel.
