The manual “How to Achieve Career Success after Military Service”, co-authored by Anastasia Khyzhnyak, Talent Enablement Director at Jooble, was presented in Kyiv.
The book offers advice for the reorientation of military experience into civilian professions. It is an essential resource for anyone seeking to navigate the complexities of transitioning from military service to a successful career in the civilian world. The manual provides a structured approach with practical steps and insights, making it an invaluable guide for veterans embarking on their new journey.
The manual’s co-author, Oleksandr Kuklyshyn, head of the NGO Zelena Smuga, asked Anastasiia Khyzhnyak to help him proofread it and update it to the current labor market situation. She took over the responsibility for the sections on how to return to everyday life after experiencing a lot of stress, create a resume, and identify your soft and hard skills.
The manual is a theoretical guide and a practical tool based on effective American methods for preparing military personnel for civilian life. It also incorporates the United States Department of Defense’s Transition Assistance Program materials. This emphasis on practicality ensures that veterans have the necessary tools for a successful transition.

The manual is distributed among Ukrainian veterans to provide them with guidance and support in finding employment when they return from service.
“I am interested in happiness and finding the meaning of life. In my free time, I read a lot and study psychology because it is still related to work issues. We have also integrated some of these ideas into our work processes,” says Anastasia.
She noted that the manual also raises the issue of finding the meaning of life and one’s place in it. According to the latest research, a person has three main mental pillars in life that they can rely on:
Therefore, military personnel need to find at least one of these pillars when returning to civilian life, and this guide will assist them.
The book consists of the following chapters: “How to Find Your Identity”, “Resilience in Transition”, “Stress Management in Transition”, “Military vs. Civilian Culture”, “The Value of Mentors”, “Transition to Civilian Employment”, “Hard and Soft Skills: How to Identify Them”, “Identifying Possible Civilian Professions”, “How to Write a Resume and Motivation Letter”, “Myths You May Encounter and How to Debunk Them”, “Exercise to Debunk Myths and Possible Self-Doubts”, “Your Experience and Path After Military Service Are Important to Others”.
The manual was a collaborative effort created on the recommendations of veterans for veterans. The NGO Zelena Smuga partnered with Jooble, the American organization Pittsburgh Hires Veterans, and the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine and received support from the Press, Education, and Culture Section of the United States Embassy in Ukraine. This collective effort underscores the support and community available to veterans in their transition to civilian life.
