Transportation Manager

Job Summary Oversees all transportation activities including route delivery and account processing as well as dispatching. Schedules drivers and assigns routes to maximize productivity and ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company rules. The Transportation Manager has full authority over the entire regional driver team and works closely with the shipping manager on issues related to the metro team as well as the mechanical manager for issues related to fleet mechanics. Must be familiar with a variety of field concepts, practices, and procedures. The Transportation Manager will report directly to the Company Officers. Job Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for the day-to-day management of the regional and metro driver team. Assists the shipping manager with metro driver issues and safety concerns. Leads others by engaging and motivating driving professionals to work in compliance with company and DOT standards. Provides exceptional customer service to all internal and external customers of River City Produce. Adapts and learns to navigate dispatching and ELD software, particularly Forward Thinking. Acts as backup driver, as needed per business demands. Interacts with vendors to provide fleet support and technical assistance. Coordinates backhauls and other inbound freight to company dock. Provides dispatch instructions to regional drivers. Ensures all safety standards are met by the professional drivers in accordance with company policy and DOT regulations. Conducts safety meetings and communicates safety concerns. Performs road tests for all CDL drivers in accordance with DOT regulations. Maintains all driver files properly in accordance with DOT regulations. Ensures all pre-employment and random drug screens and physical examinations are performed for all drivers in accordance with DOT regulations; works with HR Dept. in this area. Acts as point of contact for roadside repairs, questions and other issues (days, evenings and weekends); available “on call” as needed. Acts as liaison between transportation team and senior management for all transportation issues. Works with HR Manager in accident prevention and reporting, driver training and employee relations. Acts as liaison between RCP and DOT – participates in DOT audits. Performs other related tasks as requested by senior management. Physical Requirements Must be able to sit up to 6–9 hours daily with periodic sitting, bending, stooping and lifting as required. Must be able to stand up to 3–5 hours daily on concrete, asphalt, gravel or dirt. Must be available evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be able to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds independently. Must have corrected vision. Must be able to read job‑related documents and perform job duties. Must be able to read and write English. Environmental Conditions Must be able to work around noise and/or vibration generated by the truck and other equipment. Must be able to work around fumes, dust, gases and odors. Must work in cold warehouse environments (33°–56°F) and warm outdoor environment (up to 100°F+). Must be alert and able to identify and report hazards immediately or take corrective measures if directed. Qualifications Current Class A CDL with medical examiner’s certificate; at least 5 years OTR driving experience. Knowledge of DOT regulations and audit requirements. At least 5 years prior management or supervision experience with strong mechanical aptitude; prior experience at River City Produce comparable to managerial level (minimum 1 year with RCP). Strong interpersonal and organizational skills. Problem‑solving and troubleshooting, especially in fleet management (diesel engine vehicles). Ability to efficiently handle multiple tasks in a busy distribution center environment. Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office; adept in proprietary software training. Professional discretion with business matters. Education and Skill Requirements High school diploma or GED required. Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish). Strong familiarity with ELD software (Forward Thinking). Must satisfactorily pass DOT road test for Class A driver. Benefits Group sponsored health insurance. Voluntary Life Insurance.
