Job Description

The General Ledger Accountant plays a key role in maintaining accurate financial records by managing journal entries, performing month-end close activities, and reconciling subledgers to the general ledger. This position requires a strong understanding of account structures, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to investigate and resolve variances. You will use advanced Excel skills and financial systems to support timely, accurate reporting and continuous improvement of accounting processes.

Responsibilities

• Review general ledger account structures, including cost centers, entities, and account coding, to ensure transactions are recorded accurately based on their type.

• Perform month-end close activities, including preparing, reviewing, and posting manual and correcting journal entries.

• Reconcile subledgers to the general ledger, identify variances, and trace discrepancies back to source transactions rather than only flagging mismatches.

• Investigate and resolve reconciliation issues by digging into transaction details, determining root causes, and proposing or implementing corrective actions.

• Prepare and post both one-off journal entries and batch upload templates, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal guidelines.

• Troubleshoot journal entry and batch import errors by interpreting system messages, determining whether issues are data- or system-related, and fixing or escalating as appropriate.

• Build reconciliation workbooks from scratch in Excel to support balance sheet and income statement account reconciliations.

• Use pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and table joins in Excel to analyze financial data and validate the integrity of journal entries and reconciliations.

Essential Skills

• 1–7 years of accounting experience with a focus on general ledger activities.

• Solid understanding of general ledger structures, including cost centers, entities, and account coding.

• Hands-on experience inputting, preparing, and posting journal entries, including manual and correcting entries.

• Experience performing month-end close processes and account reconciliations.

• Proficiency in reconciling subledgers to the general ledger, identifying variances, and tracing them to source transactions.

• Strong Excel skills, including building reconciliation workbooks from scratch, using pivot tables, and applying VLOOKUP or XLOOKUP functions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a large organization with complex financial structures.

• Exposure to business warehouse (BW) or similar financial reporting and data tools.

• Ability to create and manage a SharePoint site or similar shared repository to facilitate information sharing within the accounting team.

• Strong analytical mindset with a desire to dig into issues and identify root causes rather than only flagging discrepancies.

• Attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate and reliable financial records.

• Effective communication skills to collaborate with colleagues and explain reconciliation findings and journal entry issues.

Work Environment

This role is based in a professional office setting within a large organization. You will work on-site Monday through Friday during regular business hours. The environment offers a modern, well-appointed office and access to financial systems and tools, including Excel and potentially business warehouse (BW) reporting solutions. Collaboration with other accounting and finance team members is an integral part of the role, with shared resources managed through platforms such as SharePoint.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Saint Louis, MO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $40.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
