Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 26 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Days Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience required License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit - Heparin titrated drip experience Description: The unit has 54 beds with semi-private rooms. Day shift nurse to patient ratios are 1:4-5, and night ratios are 1:5-6. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizures, brain tumors, head injuries, and general neuroscience cases. The unit may also experience some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips and have experience with heparin gtt. A charge nurse is present 24/7 and typically does not take a patient assignment unless staffing ratios exceed limits. A house supervisor is also available 24/7. Nurse aides/patient care techs are available, with day ratios of 1:9-10, evening ratios of 1:9-10, and night ratios of 1:10-12. RNs may also troubleshoot respiratory equipment such as high flow oxygen, though such cases are infrequent. Telemetry monitors are used unit-wide, and nurses do not need to read strips. Shifts are organized with the aim to meet scheduling requests. Weekend work is required every other weekend for both Saturday and Sunday. Holidays are also required every other. Floating between units may occur based on staffing needs, but only within the scope of skills competency. There is no scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are permitted. The orientation is two days and covers computer and unit-specific training with a preceptor.
