Assistant Professor in Islamicate South Asia

Position The Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations at the University of Chicago invites applications for a tenure‑track assistant professor specializing in the study of Islamicate South Asia. The appointment will begin July1,2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. Responsibilities The successful candidate will develop an active research agenda leading to publication in leading venues, and will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in English as well as advanced reading courses in his or her language(s) of expertise. Qualifications Wide‑ranging familiarity with Islamic textual traditions and cultural history of Islam in the subcontinent. Expertise in at least one relevant South Asian language (e.g., Urdu) and a solid command of Arabic and/or Persian. Active research agenda with publications in leading venues. Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate level classes in English. Ability to teach advanced reading classes in the candidate’s language(s) of expertise. Completed all requirements for receipt of a PhD in a relevant field by the start date of the appointment.
