Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Qualifications To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Current VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy) Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved VA school Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in any U.S. state, territory, or district of Columbia Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to board certification Physicians in accredited ACGME/AOA residency training programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged, but they will have a scope of practice that allows them to perform restricted duties under supervision Proficiency in spoken and written English Board certified or board eligible in Neurology (preferred); experience in the provision of neurological care to both outpatients and inpatients Experience with the administration of Botox injections; experience in management of vagal nerve stimulators Physical ability to perform job‑related duties: light carrying (under 15 lbs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking and standing up to 1 hour, and both hands and legs required Exposure to environmental factors including working inside and outside, working closely with others, and protracted or irregular hours of work is possible Health examination required prior to assignment and periodically thereafter as required by Occupational Health Clinic policy Intermittent exposure to blood and body fluids is possible Duties The James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC) located in North Chicago – Illinois is the nation’s only fully integrated facility that supports Active Duty Naval service members, Naval recruits, and our nation’s veterans. Mission: Ready Warriors and Care For Heroes. As a Staff Neurologist at FHCC – the incumbent will report to the Chief of Neurology in the Medicine Service Directorate and provide direct patient care. The incumbent will care for a broad range of age groups and neurology conditions. FHCC provides inpatient and outpatient neurology services to Active‑Duty military members, their families, Naval recruits, and veterans via inpatient consultations, ambulatory clinic referrals, and telehealth services. Services include examinations, consultative services, management of patient conditions, and application of office‑based treatments. As a teaching institution, the incumbent will educate and collaborate with health‑professional trainees assigned to the neurology service and, at a minimum, hold a position of clinical instructor at our academic affiliate. Incumbent will actively participate in medical staff meetings, relevant committees, quality assurance programs, and assist the facility in meeting established performance measures in neurology. Incumbent will perform chart reviews and coordinate with other medical staff members regarding patient care issues. Major duties and responsibilities: provide direct patient care specific to neurology in the ambulatory clinic and inpatient units; provide timely screening and resolution of consultations from other disciplines; offer a range of therapeutic interventions specific to neurology and have clinical privileges to practice including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation, and management; order diagnostic tests and interpret findings to make treatment decisions; document care in the medical record in keeping with the bylaws of the Medical Center Staff. Provide supervisory oversight for health‑professional trainees assigned to the neurology service; provide collaboration on the clinical care of physician assistants as appropriate. Participate effectively in team meetings and treatment planning conferences; collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care. Ensure practice of medicine is consistent with Joint Commission, CARF, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, VISN standards, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, mandatory continuing education, and HIPAA policies. Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Recruitment incentive (sign‑on bonus): may be authorized for a highly qualified individual.
