Controller

Established, growing Construction / Engineering / Architectural firm seeking a Controller. NEW POSITION. The Controller will be responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting operations of a growing, dynamic business unit. This role requires an equal emphasis on driving business unit success and maintaining corporate accounting integrity. Acting as a key strategic partner to owners, principals, and project managers, the ideal candidate will possess the unique ability to translate complex financial data into actionable business insights. You will bridge the gap between technical accounting and project operations, ensuring healthy working capital, accurate project tracking, and robust financial health as the organization scales. Strategic Partnership & Project Analysis Operational Partnership: Act as a key strategic contributor and financial partner to company owners, principals, and project managers. Project Health Monitoring: Partner with Project Managers (PMs) to review monthly job profitability, highlighting financial "red flags" and variances when projects risk going over budget. Project Management Support: Assist project managers in the supervision, training, and accuracy of job estimate entries, change order management, and progress/hourly billings. Core Accounting & Financial Management Month-End & Year-End Close: Manage the month-end closing process and prepare monthly financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheets) and internal operational reports. General Ledger & Reconciliations: Oversee monthly transactions in the general ledger, bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet reconciliations, including associated schedule maintenance. Full-Cycle Accounting: Lead and oversee daily accounting operations, including A/P, A/R, invoicing, collections, daily cash, and revenue/expense accruals. Payroll & Compliance: Manage the review of payroll, including commission calculations, weekly disbursements, and certified payroll reporting requirements adhering to applicable Davis‑Bacon wage decisions. Audit & Reporting Support: Coordinate and produce financial information for internal stakeholders in support of annual audits and periodic reporting obligations. Working Capital & Project Accounting Working Capital Optimization: Maintain a high focus on optimizing working capital through tight management of contracts, invoicing, and collections. Project Costing: Drive accurate project cost tracking and Work-in-Process (WIP) reporting utilizing the Percentage of Completion (POC) method as well as hourly billing structures. Required Skills & Abilities Project Accounting Expertise: Deep understanding of Work-in-Process (WIP) using the percentage of completion method, hourly billing structures, and cost accounting. Interpersonal & Communication Agility: Outstanding communication skills with a proven ability to engage, collaborate, and build relationships with diverse personalities, including introverted technical leaders, PMs, and executive owners. Technical Accounting Knowledge: Strong, foundational knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Diplomatic Leadership: Supervisory agility using tact, diplomacy, and professionalism; ability to react well and maintain clarity under pressure. Adaptability: Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to navigate a rapidly growing company environment with evolving priorities. Education and Experience Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Experience: 5+ years of operational controllership experience, ideally within the Engineering, Consulting, or Construction industries. Systems & ERP Expertise: Highly proficient with Deltek (experience with Deltek Vantagepoint or system migration is a significant plus) or similar large-scale ERP systems utilizing job cost accounting functionality. Software: Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel). Company Scale Experience: Experience working within growing organizations (e.g., scaling from 60 to 100+ employees) or private equity-backed portfolio environments is highly desirable. #J-18808-Ljbffr Babich & Associates
