We are seeking a Senior Cost Analyst/Accountant to join our growing team and lead the financial oversight of our construction projects.

Position Overview

The Senior Cost Analyst/ Accountant will be responsible for the full-cycle financial management of multiple construction projects, including budgeting, forecasting, job cost tracking, financial reporting, and month-end close. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction accounting and cost control, familiarity with SAGE or SAGE Intacct , and experience handling construction draws, change orders, and WIP schedules.

This role is essential in providing project teams and leadership with accurate, timely, and actionable financial insights to support project success and company profitability.

Key Responsibilities

Project Financial Management

• Serve as the financial point of contact for assigned construction projects from initiation through closeout.
• Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and operations to prepare initial project budgets and schedules of values.
• Develop and maintain detailed job cost reports, comparing budget vs. actuals; proactively identify cost overruns and variances.
• Perform monthly WIP (Work in Progress) analysis and reporting, including backlog tracking and revenue recognition under the percentage-of-completion method.

Accounting Functions

• Manage monthly project close processes: accruals, revenue recognition, reclassifications, and reconciliations.
• Coordinate with the Controller on GL postings related to projects and ensure accurate coding of transactions.
• Ensure all construction costs are accurately captured, including subcontractor invoices, labor, equipment, and material costs.
• Reconcile project sub-ledgers to the general ledger on a monthly basis.

Construction Draws & Change Orders

• Prepare monthly draw packages for owners and lenders, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission.
• Track and process subcontractor pay applications and lien waivers.
• Maintain and process change orders, ensuring financial impacts are reflected in budgets and forecasts.
• Support project billing and collections, ensuring proper documentation and timely follow-up.

Budgeting & Forecasting

• Lead the preparation of initial project budgets and work closely with estimators and project managers to ensure alignment.
• Perform rolling forecasts based on project progress, committed costs, and estimated completion costs.
• Prepare cash flow forecasts and track actual disbursements against forecasted expenditures.

Reporting & Analysis

• Generate and distribute project cost reports, WIP reports, and financial dashboards to stakeholders.
• Conduct variance analysis and provide insight into cost drivers and budget compliance.
• Recommend process improvements and tools for enhanced cost tracking and reporting.

Compliance & Documentation

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and company financial policies.
• Maintain organized project files and audit-ready documentation.
• Assist with internal and external audits related to project financials.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or related field.
• 5+ years of experience in construction accounting or financial project management, ideally in a boutique or mid-sized GC or developer environment.
• Prior experience as a Senior Project Accountant , Project Controller , or similar cost analyst role is highly desirable.

Technical Skills

• Proficiency in SAGE 300 (formerly Timberline) or SAGE Intacct is required.
• Strong command of Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, data analysis) and working knowledge of other MS Office products (Word, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint).
• Familiarity with project management software (Procore, Buildertrend, CMiC, etc.) is a plus.
