Nursing Professional Development Specialist - Clinical Trials Research

Overview The Nursing Professional Development Specialist I (NPDP I) is a registered nurse who uses professional development practice judgment and expertise to influence the competence and growth of learners across a variety of settings. The NPDP I supports interprofessional practice and learning environments to facilitate continuous development and learning for the healthcare team, and is responsible for applying the Scope and Standards of Nursing Professional Development Practice and Professional Performance. Location Stanford Health Care Responsibilities The NPDP I performs a wide range of duties including onboarding and orientation, competency management, education, professional role development, integration of research and evidence‑based practice, quality improvement, and the development of collaborative partnerships. Learning Facilitator – Uses the educational design process and adult learning principles to bridge knowledge, skill, and practice gaps identified through learning needs assessment and outcome evaluation. Change Agent – Actively works to transform processes at micro, meso, and macro levels, employing change management strategies and theories to drive desired outcomes. Mentor – Advances the profession of nursing and the NPD specialty by contributing to professional development of others and supporting ongoing learning. Leader – Influences interprofessional practice and learning environments, the NPD specialty, and the profession of nursing within the healthcare organization. Champion for Inquiry – Promotes a spirit of inquiry, the generation and dissemination of new knowledge, and the use of evidence to advance practice and improve care quality. Advocate for NPD Specialty – Actively supports, promotes, and demonstrates nursing professional development as a nursing practice specialty. Partner for Practice Transitions – Supports the transition of nurses and other healthcare team members across practice, learning environments, roles, and professional stages. Additional responsibilities include: Developing, coordinating, managing, facilitating, conducting, and evaluating onboarding and orientation programs for nursing and other healthcare personnel. Assessing, measuring, documenting, supporting competency, and addressing deficiencies in staff members and team competence. Planning, implementing, and evaluating educational initiatives to address practice gaps for identified target audiences and evaluate their impact on professional development. Supporting the provision of continuing nursing education and collaborating with other professions to design, manage, and evaluate interprofessional continuing education. Assisting in professional role development, practice role transitions, and succession planning. Teaching, coordinating, serving as liaison, and advising nurses and other learners concerning education and learning opportunities. Conducting, evaluating, encouraging, and disseminating inquiry and research findings to continually improve practice and patient care. Qualifications Education Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited university (required) or Master’s degree in Nursing and equivalent coursework in curriculum development, adult learning theory, learning needs assessment, and learning outcome measurement. Experience Four (4) years of progressively responsible nursing experience, including one year as a nurse educator or an equivalent role elsewhere. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Apply a professional nursing code of ethics and professional guidelines to clinical practice. Apply the Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development Practitioner to role functions. Serve as a resource for all employees within the area of specialization. Plan, implement, evaluate, and revise professional development and continuing education programs for nursing staff at the unit and organization‑wide levels. Design curricula and programs that reflect solid educational principles, incorporate evidence‑based practice, meet measurable outcomes, and satisfy external regulatory and accrediting requirements. Evaluate and document academic performance and clinical competency of staff, identifying needs, strengths, limitations, and opportunities. Plan educational programs for staff of varying ability levels given available resources. Function as a learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion of scientific inquiry, advocate for NPD specialty, and partner for practice transitions. Demonstrate SHC leadership competencies. Knowledge of adult instructional methods, learning concepts, evaluation, and current theories, principles, and emerging technologies in nursing. Knowledge of laws, regulations, standards of certifying and accrediting bodies, and hospital/unit policies governing nursing care provision. Knowledge of medical terminology, health promotion, risk reduction, illness and disease prevention, medication management, and patient privacy rights. Knowledge of relevant computer systems and software. Licenses and Certifications CA‑RN (Registered Nurse) – required upon hire. BLS – Basic Life Support – required upon hire. Physical Demands and Work Conditions The position is primarily sedentary. No special physical demands are required. The role falls under Blood Borne Pathogens Category III, indicating no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues.
