Social Worker-Investigative/Assessment & Treatment

The Johnston County DSS mission is to serve, aid and protect needy and vulnerable children and adults in ways that strengthen and preserve families. We provide human services programs that promote the health, well‑being, self‑sufficiency and protection of families, children and adults within our community. Johnston County Department of Social Services has immediate openings for a Social Worker Investigative Assessment and Treatment in the In-Home Services Unit. Responsibilities Develop a Family Services case plan or intervention plan applicable to individual cases where abuse, neglect, or dependency have been determined; work with the family, community supports, and providers to alleviate abuse, neglect and/or dependency, and maintain the family unit. Conduct family assessments for current open cases and additional abuse, neglect and/or dependency allegations; provide in-home services and seek legal intervention when required to ensure child safety. Review and prescribe intervals for the family services case plan, monitor progress toward identified goals, and adjust as necessary. Provide intensive in-home mentoring and guidance, and/or connect families with community resources and services to address abuse, neglect and/or dependency issues, aiming to eliminate intervention and maintain the original family unit and ensure a safe, permanent home for all juveniles. Provide after‑hour/on‑call coverage as needed and during non‑agency hours. Qualifications Masters degree from an accredited school of social work in Child Welfare or equivalent, plus at least one year of related social work or counseling experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited school of social work with at least one year of directly related experience, or two years of social work or counseling experience. Alternative qualifications: Four‑year degree in a human service field with at least 15 semester hours in social work or counseling courses and three years of experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Preference for candidates with prior Child Welfare experience and/or completion of mandatory Child Welfare training within the last three years. Prior experience as Social Worker III is acceptable if fully qualified applicant not located. Thorough knowledge of social work principles, techniques, and practices applicable to complex casework, group work, and community problems. Knowledge of a wide range of medical, behavioral, and psychosocial problems and their treatment. Knowledge of family and group dynamics and a range of intervention techniques. Knowledge of governmental and private organizations and resources in the community. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and policies governing the program; general knowledge of medical terminology and disease processes. Skill in establishing rapport, assessing psychosocial, behavioral, and psychological aspects of client problems. Ability to supervise, train, or instruct lower‑level social workers, students, interns in the program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with caseload clients and families, and with civic, legal, medical, social, and religious organizations. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.
