Surgical Technologist Sterile Processing Technician

The Scrub and Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for supporting surgical procedures by preparing and maintaining the operating room environment, ensuring all surgical instruments and equipment are sterile and functioning properly. This role involves assisting the surgical team during operations, managing surgical supplies, and maintaining strict adherence to aseptic techniques to prevent infection. The technician also educates and directs other personnel, manages inventory, and supports efficient surgical workflow. A minimum of one year of experience or formal training in surgical technology is required along with current BLS certification. Responsibilities:

• Prepare and maintain surgical instrument sets and equipment according to the surgery type and surgeon preferences.
• Scrub, gown, and glove self and surgical team members following sterile techniques.
• Drape patients and assist surgeons during procedures as needed, including tissue retraction and suture cutting.
• Count sponges and sharps with circulating nurse before, during, and after surgery to ensure patient safety.
• Identify and preserve surgical specimens properly.
• Assist in room and table cleanup before and after procedures and prepare for subsequent surgeries.
• Notify OR supervisor of progress, equipment issues, and schedule changes.
• Train and educate new personnel and direct assigned staff.
• Restock surgical supplies according to inventory levels and report maintenance needs of equipment.
• Operate sterilization equipment including autoclaves and sonic washers; clean and sterilize surgical instruments following protocols.
• Organize surgical instrument trays and maintain sterile storage areas.
• Stock and inventory crash carts and distribute instruments within the hospital as needed.
• Attend departmental meetings and maintain patient confidentiality and privacy.
• Follow chain of command and report pertinent information to supervisors.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Successful graduation from a Surgical Technologist training program or minimum one year of OR scrub nursing experience.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis and surgical instrument handling.
• Ability to memorize numerous surgical instruments and manage inventory accurately.
• Skill in operating sterilization equipment and following cleaning protocols.
• Ability to tolerate exposure to blood and body tissues.

• Certification as a Central Supply Technician.
• Experience anticipating surgeon's needs and familiarity with various surgical procedures and techniques.

• Willingness to work different shifts, including weekends and on-call as scheduling demands.
• Attendance at departmental staff meetings is required.
• Strict adherence to sterile technique and infection control protocols is mandatory.
• Respect for patient privacy and confidentiality is essential.

• Shift schedules may vary and include day, evening, or weekend shifts as needed.
• On-call availability may be required based on department needs.
