Assistant Childcare Director

Working at the Salvation Army’s Children’s Learning Center as an Assistant Childcare Director involves overseeing daily operations, supporting the Director, and ensuring a high-quality, safe environment for children and families. Location Dorchester, MA Hours/Exemption/Pay Hours/week: 40 hours per week Exemption: Exempt Pay Range: $55,000 – $65,000 per year (starting pay varies based on experience and qualifications). Duties & Responsibilities Collaborate and communicate with parents, teachers, administration, and other employees; attend and participate in all meetings. Develop, implement, and approve daily curriculum; foster a nurturing atmosphere with positive discipline. Manage classroom operations including transitions, routines, nap time, health and safety procedures, and material stock. Complete progress reports for each child, meet with parents to discuss progress, evaluate needs, and set goals. Maintain a safe, stable, and loving environment; keep the classroom clean and well‑equipped. Observe children to identify developmental, emotional, or behavioral needs; communicate and brainstorm solutions with teachers and administration. Implement innovative ideas to improve children’s lives; complete referrals when necessary and assist staff with referral processes. Supervise volunteers, interns, and specialists in the classroom. Assume responsibility for center operations in the Director’s absence. Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, development, and supervision of staff. Ensure daily operations run smoothly, with safety compliance and proper staffing ratios. Provide orientation for new employees, volunteers, and interns; manage daily staffing and coverage needs. Supervise, evaluate, and act as a resource for subordinates; complete employee observations and reviews when delegated. Collaborate with teachers to develop and implement core and enrichment curricula; ensure lesson plans address diverse learning styles and developmental needs. Support staff as a resource for professional growth and issue resolution. Conduct and document monthly staff meetings; arrange in‑service training. Address parent concerns and oversee regular communication about children’s progress. Solicit feedback from families and staff; develop a program improvement plan. Respond to emergencies or incidents promptly and communicate with parents and staff as needed. Perform other duties within the scope of the position. Qualifications Education Requirements: Associate’s degree; pursuing Director I certification. Work Experience: At least 2 years in a supervisory or lead teacher role, committed to the mission of The Salvation Army. Other Qualifications: High standard of personal integrity; excellent management, organizational, and communication skills; ability to multi‑task; ServSafe Certified. Physical Requirements Seat, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or occasional basis. Grasp, push, pull objects such as reference materials, files, and reach overhead. Load and adjust settings on various equipment. Operate telephone and other electronic communication devices. Operate office equipment including computers, copiers, fax machines, and scanners. Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Travel throughout the Division via car, train, or airplane. Be creative, original, intuitive, and perceptive. Think logically and critically. Envision a project from beginning to end. Solve complex problems and make appropriate judgments and decisions.
