Intermediate Care Technician

Summary The full performance Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) generalist is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs -- Veterans Health Administration. The duty locations will be in Garner - NC (Urgent Care) and Durham - NC. This position serves as an advanced technician for outpatient care settings such as primary care, mental health, urgent care, and specialty clinics. As an ICT generalist you may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic or mobile medical unit. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): The (Intermediate Care Technician/ GS-0640-07) requires an Individual Occupation Requirement that must be met in order to be considered. See the IOR requirement below: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is the application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. For GS-3: Successful completion of one year of study that included study in medical, health or related fields. For GS-4: Successful completion of two years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full four‑year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement above, the specialized experience below is required to be considered for the position. Applicants may qualify based on their experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS‑06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include – but are not limited to: working knowledge of topographic anatomy – e.g., right/left surface, proximal/distal, superior, inferior – to accurately transmit location information about the body; working knowledge of diagnostic signs – e.g., pulse, respiration, blood pressure, temperature, skin color, pupils, state of consciousness, ability to move on command, reaction to pain, etc. – to perform patient evaluation, to provide patient care, and to ensure appropriate patient handling; knowledge of medications (their uses, doses, side effects, adverse effects, and toxicity signs) sufficient to properly administer drugs even when directed by licensed staff; knowledge of proper dosages; demonstrates knowledge of isolation techniques and universal precautions; knowledge of major psychiatric conditions – depressive, anxiety, bipolar, substance use disorders, and schizophrenia; knowledge of the components of suicide risk assessment – warning signs, environmental safety, and referral. Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience, but the education must include courses directly related to the work of the position. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education meeting the requirements for GS‑7. One year of full‑time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school has determined to represent one year of full‑time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one‑year requirement. Part‑time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full‑time study at the school attended. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in the military as a Hospital Corpsman, Combat Medic, Medical Technician is highly desired. Duties Performing ongoing patient care duties in a critical care setting under the delegated authority of the supervising physician, licensed independent provider (LIP), and/or advanced practice provider (APP) assigned. Communicating effectively with supervising physicians, LIP, and APP to provide collaborative, timely and appropriate patient care. Performing observation‑based screening and collecting patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel. Assisting in behavioral/psychiatric situations in a clinical care setting. Assisting critical care licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex, specialized, and potentially life‑threatening situations. Operating specialized medical equipment. Providing support, relief, and coverage as needed to central telemetry station. Performing specimen collection. Responding to medical emergencies on the facility grounds and sometimes encounters situations which may be life threatening as part of the Rapid Response Team (RRT), Code Blue, or medical transport team.
