Position Overview

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center are seeking a Breast Oncologist to join the Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Medical Oncology. Academic rank and track will be commensurate with academic record and experience.

Responsibilities

Physician specializing in Breast Oncology will serve as a member of the Division of Medical Oncology, within the Department of Internal Medicine. Duties include providing direct and indirect patient care services in inpatient and outpatient settings; conducting ambulatory clinics; interviewing, obtaining and reviewing medical history of patients; performing physical examinations; conducting relevant oncology procedures; ordering diagnostic testing and ancillary services; responding to consultation requests; determining, prescribing, and implementing treatment plans and medications; documenting all services in the medical record; educating patients and families about wellness, prevention, and early detection; directing and participating in quality assessment and improvement activities; serving as preceptor and providing bedside training to residents, fellows, medical students, allied health professionals, and other staff; ensuring continuing medical education requirements are met; and participating in departmental, college, medical center, and university committees and service activities.

Background and Context

The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute – expanded in December 2014 to become the third largest cancer hospital in the United States, featuring a 398‑bed, state‑of‑the‑art facility. The Cancer Center houses the Stefanie Spielman Comprehensive Breast Center (SSCBC), which provides all breast cancer care, including diagnostic imaging, a fully independent laboratory, an infusion center, and supportive services such as social work, physical therapy, and a Lymphedema Center of Excellence. SSCBC sees an average of more than 1,000 new breast cancer patients per year and includes 46 dedicated breast physicians across multiple specialties.

Within The Ohio State University Breast Medical Oncology Section, 14 Breast Medical Oncologists collaborate with advanced practice providers, Magnet nursing professionals, and medical scribes. The Section supports extensive translational and clinical trials research programs, with a robust clinical trial portfolio and research collaborations.

Research and Clinical Opportunities

• More than 50 open clinical trials, including early phase I and II studies conducted within the SSCBC and OSU Clinical Trials Unit.
• Over 15 published retrospective studies since 2019, with nearly 15 additional ongoing analyses.
• Translational Breast Cancer Research Program encompassing tissue/blood sample coordination, genomic profiling, trial correlative support, and collaborative research opportunities.
• Pelotonia Institute for Immuno‑Oncology, a comprehensive bench‑to‑bedside research initiative focusing on immune‑based cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.
• Programmatic focus areas include translational research, inflammatory breast cancer, high‑risk patient care, health disparities, breast immunotherapy, adolescent and young adult care with onco‑fertility and sexual health services, geriatric care, and survivorship.

Requirements

Required Qualifications: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Completion of accredited Oncology/Hematology Fellowship. Board Certification in Internal Medicine and board eligibility or certification in Medical Oncology, and ability to meet medical licensure requirements in Ohio. Active DEA certification required.
