Description Under general supervision in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, incumbent will work as the Department of Radiation Medicine and Applied Sciences Laboratory Manager in research laboratory in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Lab Management duties include management of outgoing orders, install, operate and maintain laboratory equipment, work with outside vendors, orient new employees to laboratory practices including purchasing, act as Radiation Safety and Area Safety Coordinator and maintain/develop laboratory databases. Incumbent will oversee research being done in the lab, analyze and problem-solve for experimental procedures and protocols, write IACUC protocols, BUA protocols, edit grant applications and journal publications for grammar and content. Incumbent will monitor and report on budgets/funding sources, coordinate repairs, purchase and maintain equipment and supplies, and ensure lab compliance with safety regulations. Manage the coordination of research activities in the lab including scheduling and organization of studies, finding and modifying appropriate protocols and regulations for the experiments. Provide oversight and provide general lab support, operation and maintenance of mouse colony, and cellular and molecular biology experimental techniques. Responsible for maintaining organized records of all animal use and reagents in freezers, refrigerators and liquid nitrogen tank. Oversee laboratory environmental health and safety activities ensuring compliance with EH&S regulations, including chemical waste and biological waste disposal. Monitor and comply with all funding guidelines as well as work closely with department business officers. Inform PI of financial situation and suggest possible plans of action to reduce spending. Provide technical and physical assistance to departmental labs and staff. In addition, the incumbent will independently performs a wide variety of standardized experimental research techniques, analyze and plot data to draw independent scientific conclusions for presentation at lab meetings. Conducts specialized tests and research experiments as instructed by lab members to include postdoctoral researchers, students, research scientists, medical students, fellows, and residents. Minimum Qualifications Advanced theoretical knowledge for complex experimental design in cell biology, molecular biology, pharmacology and physiology and/or Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience. Demonstrated experience overseeing/managing research projects. Proven ability to handle multiple research projects, deadlines, and conflicts in an environment of shifting priorities and resource constraints. Skills in analyzing research assignments and projects, gathering data and information, determine and evaluate solutions or alternatives and provide recommendations. Skilled at preparing plans and specifications for research projects. Experience with laboratory design. Knowledge of the utilities needed for scientific equipment. Knowledge of specialized laboratory materials used in the construction of life sciences facilities. Experience in formulating and executing protocols to test therapy effects on cells and mice. Experienced in current DNA damage assay techniques including: agarose gel electrophoresis, clonogenic survival assays, and immunofluorescence assays. Advanced knowledge of cell culture. Demonstrated experience in mammalian cell cultures. Ability to do standard biochemical assays. Experience in advanced laboratory procedures, including trouble shooting and experimental design. Knowledge of sterile techniques. Experience in protein purification techniques. Demonstrated knowledge with the use, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex laboratory equipment including centrifuges, microscopes, pH meter. Advanced knowledge of chemistry and biology sufficient to prepare solutions of specified composition and pH. Demonstrated knowledge of principles underlying DNA, RNA, and protein analysis. Experience performing standard laboratory experiments including but not limited to Western blotting, PCR, and Immunofluorescence assays. Strong demonstrated experience in methods including DNA, RNA and protein analysis using biochemical techniques. Demonstrated experience in handling and working with small animals, biohazardous materials, and toxic chemicals. Experience in organizing and maintaining mouse colonies. Knowledge of vivaria procedures and equipment used for care of animals. Knowledge of UCSD policies and procedures preferred regarding care and use of animals. Experience with the following procedures in mice: flank injection and PDX models. Strong organizational skills including ability to conduct and shepherd projects, work well with students and technicians, help others to meet goals and deadlines. Demonstrated knowledge in the use of advanced microscopy systems. Including confocal imaging, live cell imaging, IVIS in‑vivo imagers. Ability to maintain careful, legible and well‑organized laboratory notes. Attention to protocol and details. Knowledge of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents. Ability to work independently and cooperatively, taking instructions and explaining protocols to others. Ability to communicate with colleagues and superiors, including asking questions and notifications of problems. Experience with, and skill in using PC and Macintosh‑based data analysis software including spreadsheets, statistical data evaluation, writing of reports, and assistance in publication preparation. Ability to inform new staff and faculty members about UC policies and regulations. Assist new PI's in initial lab setup and space usage. Make minor facility modifications to facilitate new and existing equipment. Ability to set up new equipment and utilize building resources for proper operation. Aid in the repair and usage of departmental equipment. Advise PI's on new equipment purchases and their capabilities. Gather price quotes from vendors for new departmental equipment. Generally assist other labs in the department with equipment and technical advice. Keep detailed records of lab members training and certifications and alert them when refresher courses are necessary. Ensure that calibrated equipment is up to date and in compliance with UC regulations. Train incoming lab members on how to safely and efficiently use lab equipment and handle potentially dangerous materials. Advanced knowledge in IACUC and animal welfare regulations. Extensive experience with harvesting tumor and tissue for use in western blotting, gel electrophoresis, PCR, nucleic acid and protein isolation, and histological procedures. Special Conditions Employment is subject to a criminal background check. Willingness to work evenings and weekends if necessary. Willingness to work with animals. Be available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week for potential problems with specimens and/or specimen freezers. Must be willing to work with hazardous materials. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $75,449 - $121,324 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $36.13 - $58.11 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable). If applicable, life‑support certifications (BLS, NRP, ACLS, etc.) must include hands‑on practice and in‑person skills assessment; online‑only certification is not acceptable.
