Overview Academic Student Support Program Specialist – PRISM The Program for Research Initiatives for Science & Math (PRISM), an award-winning undergraduate research mentoring program at John Jay College (JJC) of the City University of New York is looking for a Research & Outreach Coordinator (ROC) to help manage and implement activities designed for undergraduate science students. This position reports to the PRISM Program Director and Associate Director, who manage the program. Primary responsibilities include offering students enrolled in science majors at John Jay and its sister community college partners guidance, advisement, support, and resources that will help them achieve success in college. Toward this end, the ROC will organize workshops, field trips, lab tours, seminars, and other events at the College; he/she will serve as a liaison to our community college partner institutions engaging students at those institutions to participate in research and articulate to JJC; she/he will track the participation and completion rates of students, and perform other tasks as needed. In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Academic Student Support Program Specialist duties include, but are not limited to the following: Develop and implement strategies for recruiting new students both from the CJA and John Jay into PRISM, with an emphasis on Latinos/as and other students underrepresented in STEM disciplines. Liaise with five partnering community colleges to make the targeted student populations aware of our existing STEM articulation agreements through the CUNY Justice Academy (CJA). Manage the S-STEM Scholarship Program at John Jay, funded by the National Science Foundation. This includes reviewing applications, meeting with students, and requesting fund disbursement through the Research Foundation of CUNY. Organize and invite speakers for seminar series in coordination with faculty at JJC and other CUNY and outside schools. The goal of the series is to expose undergraduate science students to scientific communication and discussion. Organize science outings each semester, with behind-the-scenes programming and presentations, for community college and JJC students. Prepare and publish materials for the PRISM social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat) to disseminate information about events, highlight student success stories and increase visibility of the program. Prepare workshops for PRISM Jr. Scholars Program, a NYS funded initiative. Workshops are focused on career and professional development, study skills and exposure to careers in science. Provide 1-on-1 Mentoring of PRISM students, including career & academic advisement, preparation of application materials, personal statement and interview skills. Track students’ progress and performance for reporting purposes. Performs related duties as assigned. PRISM, is located at John Jay College near Columbus Circle in the heart of Manhattan, NYC. The Program provides academic and pre-professional support to undergraduate STEM students of all levels in an effort to promote their pursuit of post-graduate education and careers in the sciences. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and four years’ related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduate degree in a science field, with research experience as part of an advanced degree program. A background in community outreach and program coordination. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, and the ability to multi-task. Refined written skills and articulate public speaking ability. Enthusiastic and flexibility. The individual in this position needs to be comfortable with advising/mentoring students of diverse backgrounds, experience cultivating relationships with students, and a strong commitment to Hispanics and other disadvantaged groups.
