Product Marketer
Convex
Convex Backend PlatformConvex is the backend platform that keeps up with you and your agents. Our mission is to fundamentally change how software is built on the Internet by empowering developers to create fast, reliable, and dynamic apps without a backend team. We provide a full-stack app platform carefully designed with database, compute and backend abstractions that allow developers and LLMs to move fast but also create products that scale and remain simple over their lifetime. The Team:Convex has assembled a team that has built and designed some of the largest platforms in the world, and scaled companies to millions in revenue and thousands of employees. We're a group of friendly, collaborative, and passionate people that love working in-person together in our office in San Francisco. We hire primarily in SF but have a few experienced folks working remotely in certain situations. The Role:We ship frequently, but aren't great at talking about it. That's the whole problem this role exists to solve. Once developers find us they tend to stick around. One of the highest-leverage things we could be doing right now is simply making sure the world hears about everything we build, in a way that sounds like us and not like everyone else. Your job will be to own how Convex talks about what it builds, across every channel. The hard part is the how. Developers have an immune response to hype; we'd sooner publish a "how to give Convex less money" post than pretend what we do is magic. The most persuasive thing we can do is show the substance plainly and trust that good engineers will recognize it. You'll need a good sense for the difference between substance and spin, and a strong enough point of view to hold the line even when the easy thing is to reach for the buzzword. You'll drive the launch strategy and you'll also write the post and cut the assets. We're too small for the kind of product marketer who only makes slides. If you like the idea of running the whole thing for a product developers genuinely love, you're going to like it here. What You'll Do:Make sure every meaningful thing we ship is heard by the developers who'd care.Drive launches end to end: everything from the narrative through the actual assets.Translate engineering work into something developers care about, honestly, without reaching for hype.Ensure we're talking about our work consistently, not in occasional bursts.Be the connective tissue between engineering, developer experience, design, and creators. What Excites Us:Experience marketing a technical or developer product without making developers cringe.Proven ability to own a launch completely, from the first brief to the final asset.Enough organization to run a real launch calendar and keep things moving.Strong writing with technical developer-facing work to show for it.Interest in working in-person at Convex's office in SF.Ideal CharacteristicsThis is an attempt to outline some characteristics of candidates who tend to thrive at Convex. We have a high demand for both commercial judgment and the ability to actually build, while also having the typical demands of a small startup.Do They Get Developers?Developer tools are different. Your audience is technical, skeptical, and quick to spot inauthenticity. Marketing that works for a business app falls flat here. We want someone who has internalized what it feels like to be a developer evaluating a product, and who markets accordingly. Can They Market Without The BS?Our whole approach is that honesty outperforms hype with this audience. We want someone who finds buzzwords a little embarrassing and is genuinely better at the harder thing: making the real substance land. Can They Actually Write?Writing is the heart of this job. We're not looking for someone who can produce serviceable copy, but someone who can take something complicated and make it clear, with a structure that scans and a point of view that sticks. It's the rarest thing we're looking for and the hardest to fake.Do They Have A Point Of View? The best product marketing we've seen doesn't just describe what shipped, it makes a case for why it matters. We want someone who can look at a feature, a product decision, or a new capability and form a strong opinion about the story worth telling, then tell it in a way that earns a developer's attention rather than demanding it.Do They Bring Energy To The Room?Startups are hard. Building something from nothing is hard. Driving forward progress despite uncertainty is hard. Shitting on stuff is easy and just brings everyone else down. We have a high bar for quality but also a high bar for being constructive, positive, and excited about making things better. We're meant to be having fun here.
