Job Title: Clinical Laboratory Accessioner
Job Description
The Clinical Laboratory Accessioner performs receiving, accessioning, and general laboratory activities in a CLIA-regulated environment. In this role, you receive and prepare patient stool samples for testing by Clinical Laboratory Scientists, ensure accurate data entry into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), and support day-to-day laboratory operations through routine setup, maintenance, and quality-focused workflows.
Responsibilities
This position is based in an onsite clinical laboratory environment operating under CLIA regulations. You will work primarily Monday through Friday during standard daytime hours, with participation in a rotating Saturday schedule approximately every other month as part of the team. Over time, the laboratory is expected to expand into first and second shifts in the future, and candidates should be open to potential shift structure changes down the road. The role involves frequent handling of stool specimens, repetitive labeling, scanning, aliquoting, pipetting, and use of centrifuges and other common laboratory equipment. You will work at the bench and at a computer, performing data entry into the LIMS and other systems in a fast-paced, deadline-driven setting. The environment emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and adherence to biohazard and waste disposal protocols, with routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment and work areas. Attire follows standard clinical laboratory expectations, including appropriate personal protective equipment when handling specimens and biohazard materials. Job Description
The Clinical Laboratory Accessioner performs receiving, accessioning, and general laboratory activities in a CLIA-regulated environment. In this role, you receive and prepare patient stool samples for testing by Clinical Laboratory Scientists, ensure accurate data entry into the laboratory information management system (LIMS), and support day-to-day laboratory operations through routine setup, maintenance, and quality-focused workflows.
Responsibilities
- Receive patient stool samples from shippers and verify that each specimen meets laboratory criteria for suitability and acceptance.
- Accession samples according to established laboratory procedures, including accurate patient and specimen identification and documentation in the LIMS.
- Prepare and print specimen labels, apply labels correctly to tubes and containers, and verify accuracy before processing.
- Aliquot stool samples into appropriate tubes for downstream testing, ensuring correct volumes, proper handling, and thorough documentation.
- Perform basic sample preparation tasks, including pipetting, labeling, and use of centrifuges as required by standard operating procedures.
- Support RNA/DNA sample preparation workflows from stool specimens to enable downstream molecular testing and biomarker analysis.
- Provide general laboratory support such as tube labeling, equipment cleaning and routine maintenance, biohazard waste removal, and stocking consumables and supplies.
- Identify problems that may adversely affect proper processing or integrity of samples, and promptly escalate issues to appropriate laboratory leadership according to procedures.
- Handle patient samples and protected health information (PHI) in accordance with CLIA regulations, laboratory policies, and confidentiality requirements.
- Follow and comply with all standard operating procedures, safety guidelines, and quality standards in a CLIA laboratory setting.
- Perform accurate and timely data entry, scanning, and documentation of all specimen-related activities in laboratory systems.
- Collaborate with colleagues across a complex, multi-functional laboratory environment to support efficient workflows and timely test processing.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, including proper management of biohazard materials and waste.
- Contribute to a positive, results-oriented team environment by communicating effectively and supporting team goals and deadlines.
- Perform other laboratory-related duties as assigned to support operational needs and continuous improvement.
- High School Diploma required.
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field preferred, with a strong preference for a BS degree to support potential advancement within the laboratory.
- If High School Diploma or Associate's Degree: prior specimen processing experience is required.
- If Bachelor's Degree: no prior laboratory experience is required beyond experience working in a fast-paced environment such as retail, food service, or pharmacy technician roles.
- Demonstrated ability to understand, follow, and comply with detailed standard operating procedures.
- Experience handling patient samples and PHI in a CLIA laboratory setting is strongly preferred.
- Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and consistently while maintaining strong attention to detail.
- Comfort working with stool samples and related biomarker testing for gastrointestinal disease and cancer.
- Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques such as pipetting, labeling, aliquoting, and centrifugation.
- Accurate data entry skills and ability to work with laboratory information systems or similar databases.
- Proven ability to multitask and work effectively in an agile, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to share and receive information across all levels of the organization.
- Demonstrated high ethical standards and professional conduct in handling sensitive information and laboratory materials.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a results-oriented team, building strong interpersonal working relationships.
- Exposure to RNA/DNA molecular work, PCR, or related techniques from a laboratory or academic setting.
- Experience with specimen collection, specimen prep, and accessioning workflows.
- Prior experience in data entry and scanning within a healthcare or laboratory environment.
- Familiarity with LIMS or other electronic laboratory systems.
- Ability to remain focused and productive in a highly repetitive role that requires consistent accuracy and precision.
- Track record of being proactive, resourceful, and efficient when facing changing priorities or deadlines.
