Job Summary:  

The Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurse (RN) provides rapid assessment, treatment, and patient care in a fast-paced setting. The ER RN is responsible for stabilizing patients, responding to medical emergencies, and collaborating with providers and healthcare teams to deliver high-quality emergency care. Scheduled workday and times may vary depending on the needs of the department and will include weekends and holidays. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supports and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
• Delivers nursing care according to the standards of care defined within the Illinois Nurse Practice Act. 
• Provides rapid patient assessments and prioritizes care using triage protocols.
• Monitor, assess, and document patient conditions, vital signs, and responses to treatment. 
• Administer medications, IV therapies, blood products, and treatments according to provider orders and hospital policies and procedures. 
• Assist providers during emergency procedures, trauma care, and life-saving interventions. 
• Operate and monitor emergency medical equipment, including cardiac monitors, and respiratory equipment. 
• Maintains accurate and timely documentation in the patient’s health record. 
• Communicate changes in patient condition in a timely manner to providers and other members of the healthcare team. 
• Responds quickly and effectively to medical emergencies, cardiac arrests, and trauma situations. 
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams, EMS personnel, and support staff to coordinate care. 
• Effectively communicates with co-workers on a timely basis including end of shift updates.
• Uses critical thinking to make clinical decisions and set priorities related to workload management based on clinical knowledge and individual patient needs.
• Prepare patients for diagnostic tests, surgeries, transfers, and admissions. 
• Ensure compliance with infection control, patient safety, HIPAA, and regulatory standards. 
• Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly work area and upkeep of the department to meet all regulatory requirements. 
• Is knowledgeable of general hospital and unit specific policies and procedures.
• Educate patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, procedures, discharge instructions, and follow-up care. 
• Assist with diagnostic tests, procedures, and emergency interventions as needed. 
• Participate in department meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and continuing education programs. 
• Provide emotional support and compassionate care to patients and families during stressful situations. 
• Other duties may be assigned and are subject to change with or without prior notice.

• Strong decision making, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skills.
• Knowledge of nursing principles, patient care standards, and healthcare regulations. 
• Ability to stay calm and effective in high-pressure situations. 
• Completes and maintains all required education and/or training requirements.
• Complies with HIPAA regulations and always maintains patient confidentiality.
• Follows and maintains all lawful safety, health requirements, and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment (PPE).
• Promptly reports safety issues, job-related injury, or illness, near misses, etc. in SafetyZone.
• Follows Hillsboro Health Standards of Behavior.

Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

• Graduated from an accredited school of nursing. 
• Ability to pass specific competencies for this position.
• Previous ED experience preferred. 

Certificates and Licenses:

• Current and active Illinois RN license.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required or willing to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Pediatric Life Support (PALS) required or willing to obtain within 90 days of hire.
• Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) required or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
