Manager Respiratory Therapy - Outpatient Services

Position Summary Under the general supervision of the Director Respiratory Therapy, the Manager Respiratory Therapy provides technical, operational and administrative leadership for the department. This includes managing all aspects of the day‑to‑day operations for the BMC campus, working closely with Medical Directors to ensure staff are providing the highest clinical care, interfacing with key stakeholders across the hospital, developing and implementing policies and procedures, and contributing to setting and executing annual goals and departmental strategy. Position Manager Respiratory Therapy Department Respiratory Therapy Schedule Full Time (40 Hrs Days) Essential Responsibilities / Duties Manages employees, performs orientation and training, and conducts administrative and clerical tasks to facilitate effective intra/inter department business. Completes time schedules accurately and on‑time. Performs QA audits to ensure quality of care provided and departmental compliance with regulatory and accrediting agencies. Assists in planning and developing departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance. Monitors subordinate performance and takes corrective action to uphold standards. Performs written evaluation of subordinates. Coordinates activities of staff regarding cleaning and sterilizing equipment to ensure current supply for patient care. Assists in selecting candidates for employment, as directed. Conducts activities to ensure further training and development of respiratory staff and other patient care personnel. Orients new employees to ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures and standards of care. Provides in‑services to all staff in new therapeutics. Functions as a resource for complex patient care problems to respiratory staff and other healthcare providers. Provides formal and/or clinical education to individuals indicated during the time period directed. Attends physician rounds as appropriate. Ensures continued professional educational development of staff to keep skills current. Maintains clinical competency in areas of responsibility. Attends continuing education classes during the year. Tracks and holds staff accountable for meeting educational goals. Attends all scheduled staff meetings or, if unable, reviews minutes. Maintains membership in professional organizations and reads professional journal articles monthly. Follows all organization and departmental precautions to ensure a safe work environment. Operates respiratory care equipment and performs all procedures safely. Demonstrates proper body mechanics during lifting or moving patients or heavy equipment. Understands and follows emergency, infection control and universal precaution procedures. Follows hospital infection control and safety procedures. Provides departmental leadership in setting annual goals, developing strategy, and driving high performance. Works with the Director of Respiratory Therapy to set, monitor, and meet targeted volume goals. Works closely with Respiratory Care Leadership to set, monitor, and meet targeted quality improvement goals. Builds buy‑in to goals with staff and creates dialogue to provide constructive feedback. Maintains an adequate inventory of supplies and equipment to meet operational demands. Collects and analyzes data related to department performance to convey key operating information to administration when requested. Ensures communication within the Respiratory Care Department and throughout the organization to share pertinent information. Assists in developing the departmental budget within designated deadlines according to all budgetary policies and procedures. Works closely with Medical Directors on all of the above. Must adhere to all of BMC’s RESPECT behavioral standards. Education Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred. Graduate of an AMA‑approved program in Respiratory Care. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required Current license from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Respiratory Therapist and registration with the National Board of Respiratory Care. Experience At least 5 years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist and 2‑3 years of supervisory experience. Knowledge And Skills Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pulmonary physics, pulmonary pathophysiology, advanced respiratory care mathematics, blood gas chemistry, and pharmacology. Experience with bronchoscopy assistance and pulmonary function testing. Understanding of specialty gas administration, lung‑protective ventilation techniques, and artificial airway management. Interpersonal skills necessary to manage, develop, motivate, and discipline staff and interact with stakeholders across the hospital. Assures scheduled preventive maintenance is up to date and coordinates with vendors for equipment maintenance and loaners. Ability to explain hospital and department policies and procedures in complex patient care contexts. Ability to evaluate staff performance and develop sound policies and procedures. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). Familiarity with data analysis. Experience in quality improvement and ability to interpret performance charts and metrics. Ability to rely on experience, judgment, and time‑management skills to plan and accomplish goals. Positive, team‑oriented attitude and professional appearance. Assists with orientation and training of new staff. Special Working Conditions Responsibility for providing 24‑hour coverage on a rotating basis.
