Job Description

Job Description

CHIEF ADVANCEMENT & EXTERNAL AFFAIRS OFFICER

ABOUT LOS ANGELES JEWISH HEALTH

Los Angeles Jewish Health (LAJH) is the largest nonprofit, single-source provider of comprehensive senior healthcare in the Greater Los Angeles area. Founded in 1912, the organization has provided compassionate, high-quality care to older adults for more than a century. What began as a small neighborhood effort to shelter seniors has grown into a nationally recognized continuum of care serving thousands of individuals annually through residential living, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, memory care, behavioral health, hospice, and community-based services.

Rooted in Jewish values and guided by a deep commitment to dignity, compassion, and excellence, Los Angeles Jewish Health serves seniors of all backgrounds while honoring a legacy of trusted care. With multiple campuses, a broad range of services, and a strong tradition of philanthropy and volunteer engagement, the organization is positioned for continued growth and innovation in senior wellness, healthcare delivery, and community impact.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to the President & CEO and serving as a core member of the Executive Leadership Team, the Chief Advancement & External Affairs Officer (CAEAO) will lead a fully integrated advancement and external engagement strategy that advances LAJH's long-term sustainability, including a $150M capital campaign, brand leadership, and community impact.

This executive will unify philanthropy, marketing, communications, board engagement, government relations, and strategic partnerships under a cohesive growth framework. The CAEAO will elevate LAJH's regional profile, expand diversified revenue streams, and position the organization as a leading voice in aging services and senior healthcare.

This is a transformational leadership role requiring strategic vision, executive presence, healthcare fluency, and demonstrated success driving large-scale philanthropic growth within complex and mission-driven systems.

This role represents a significant opportunity to transform LAJH's advancement function into a best-in-class, nationally recognized program.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with the CEO to develop and execute a multi-year advancement and external relations strategy aligned with organizational priorities.
  • Work closely with the Board and the executive team to strengthen and diversify the LAJH philanthropic base.
  • Establish clear revenue targets, performance metrics, and accountability systems across fundraising channels.
  • Participate in executive leadership planning, budgeting, and strategic initiatives.
  • Strengthen forecasting models and reporting tools to monitor performance for philanthropy and communications.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and collaboration across the organization.
  • Engage with program and clinical leadership (including a close collaboration with physicians, program leaders, and operational teams) to develop compelling philanthropic opportunities tied to programmatic priorities and patient impact.

Leadership & Team Management

  • Lead and inspire a high-performing advancement and communications team, providing mentorship, professional development, and clear performance expectations.
  • Foster a respectful, collaborative, hard-working, and accountable culture that emphasizes excellence, creativity, belonging, and tangible results.
  • Drive performance accountability by establishing, monitoring, and evaluating staff performance metrics and fundraising effectiveness, ensuring goals are met and progress is clearly reported to leadership.

Capital Campaign Leadership

  • Lead the launch and execution of a multi-year $150M capital campaign, currently in the early leadership phase.
  • Develop campaign case statements, donor engagement strategies, and prospect pipelines.
  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and steward leadership-level and principal gift prospects.
  • Partner with the executive leadership team and Board leadership to secure major philanthropic commitments.

Annual Campaign and Fundraising

  • Provide strategic oversight and accountability for the $16M annual fundraising goal, setting comprehensive revenue strategies aligned with organizational priorities, defining measurable performance benchmarks, and building a strong culture of accountability.
  • Oversee diversified revenue streams, including major gifts, mid-level giving, planned giving, and special initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities across institutional grants, government funding, corporate partnerships, and strategic alliances that support long-term organizational sustainability.
  • Ensure strong donor lifecycle management, stewardship, and retention strategies.
  • Utilize data analytics and CRM systems to optimize performance and donor engagement.
  • Lead the planning, execution, and successful completion of the organization's endowment campaign, including prospect strategy, major donor engagement, volunteer leadership management, and performance tracking.
  • Strengthen advancement systems and reporting tools, using data-driven insights to guide donor strategy and measure fundraising performance.

Marketing and Communications

  • Ensure that marketing, communications, and brand messaging support philanthropic growth, donor engagement and the broader visibility of LAJH.
  • Ensure consistent messaging and brand positioning across all communications platforms.
  • Lead development of campaign materials, digital content, and donor communications.
  • Partner with the CEO and communications team to shape external positioning, coordinating messaging, digital outreach, media relations, and campaign communications so they effectively support fundraising while strengthening the organization's overall reputation.
  • Elevate LAJH's brand and position the organization as a leader in senior healthcare, PACE, aging services, and behavioral health.

Board Relations and Governance Partnership

  • Strengthen board engagement in philanthropy, ensuring active participation in fundraising, donor cultivation, and campaign leadership.
  • Partner closely with the CEO and Board leadership to shape organizational strategy, align priorities, and support high-impact decision-making across governance and executive functions.
  • Working with the CEO, ensure compliance with fiduciary duties, bylaws, and 501(c)(3) regulatory requirements, including board orientation, governance education, and external engagement strategies.
  • Assess board composition and lead recruitment to address skills gaps and advance long-term strategic goals.
  • Build a high-performing Board with strong fundraising capacity and ambassadorial leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field required, advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience in advancement, fundraising, or external growth roles, preferably within a nonprofit, healthcare, or mission-driven organization.
  • Proven experience leading major capital campaigns, including planning, feasibility and execution.
  • Demonstrated success in personally securing six and seven-figure philanthropic commitments, with a strong track record in major gifts, institutional fundraising, and revenue growth aligned to strategic objectives.
  • Proven executive leadership experience, including building and mentoring high-performing development teams, partnering strategically with CEOs and Boards, and influencing cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Deep expertise in donor cultivation and stewardship strategies, advancement operations, and data-informed fundraising practices, with the ability to translate organizational vision into compelling philanthropic investment opportunities.
  • Proven track record of overseeing integrated marketing and communications strategies that support revenue growth.
  • Ability to manage and lead legislative advocacy, regulatory engagement, and coalition-building to advance organizational policy priorities at the local, state, and federal levels.
  • Proven track record of developing strong connections within a philanthropic community, maintaining a dynamic presence with excellent relationship-building skills, and the ability to engage diverse stakeholders as an innovative and collaborative thought partner.
  • Genuine and compelling enthusiasm for LAJH's mission and alignment with its Jewish values.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The salary range is $300,000 – $350,000. Benefits include:

  • Comprehensive health coverage, including medical, dental, and vision plans
  • Employer-paid life insurance plus optional disability, accident, and critical illness coverage
  • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and retirement savings plan (403(b)) with employer match
