Desktop Engineer

Overview Compensation Grade: S18-H Salary Range: $36.12 - $52.38 Opening Date: June 26, 2026 Closing Date: July 11, 2026 As a Desktop Engineer, you will deploy and support the Airports Authority's enterprise desktop environment and provide Tier III support to users throughout the Airports Authority. Position Desktop Engineer – IT Service Delivery Division, Office of Technology, Washington Dulles International Airport (may also support users at Corporate Headquarters or Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport). General Responsibilities Supports the enterprise desktop environment, including all devices used by Airports Authority end-users. Installs, configures, and administers UEM tools like SCCM or Intune, System Center Update Publisher, Microsoft Windows Server, and Microsoft Office. Creates and deploys Windows desktops and maintains standard golden image configurations for virtual desktop environments. Manages the deployment process for operating systems, including image updates, task sequences, pre-installation boot images, driver packages, and User State Migration Tool configurations. Creates and modifies SQL queries in UEM tools. Installs and configures client software using Group Policy, SCCM, Intune, or similar products. Manages application and software updates, creates standard and custom packages, and publishes them to the software catalog. Creates and deploys custom client settings and establishes priority levels. Operates within the ITIL framework with formal change control and release processes. Configures and manages security roles, enterprise anti-virus systems, and integrated security software. Administers Intune and/or SCCM reporting sites, enabling staff to create customized reports. Installs and tests service packs and updates on servers and clients. Executes test lab activities and maintains resources for hardware and software applications, including automated deployment, validation, and reliability procedures. Provides Tier III IT Service Desk support to end-users, resolving complex technical problems and collaborating with system engineers on problem management or root cause analysis. Identifies requirements, risks, and provides recommendations to office management to mitigate operational impacts of enterprise and custom applications. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Three years of progressively responsible experience in a user or system support role, including: Creating and deploying Windows desktops Creating and modifying SQL queries Configuring software and managing updates One year of expert-level administration in a UEM tool such as SCCM or Intune. At least two years of experience administering and managing test lab activities. Experience with UEM infrastructure: designing, installing, deploying hardware and software; creating custom software, update packages, driver packages, installation scripts, and OS task sequences. Skilled in installing and configuring client software and managing user and device collections. Proficient in administering SCCM, Intune, or Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager, and Windows Server 2016 or newer. Proficient in creating and maintaining standardized Windows Imaging (WIM) images and the golden image library. Skilled in providing Tier III desktop incident support, analyzing complex issues, and documenting standardized processes. Ability to analyze data, make recommendations, and communicate technical issues to non‑technical audiences. Preferred Qualifications ITIL v3 Foundations Certification. Experience with MDM (Mobile Device Management) tools. Education High school diploma or Certificate of General Education Development (GED). Certifications and Licenses Required State driver's license in good standing. ITIL v3 or above Foundations Certification, or ability to obtain it within 180 days of hiring. Necessary Special Factors Ability to operate vehicle landside and airside (requires AOA permit). Must be able to work and support users at any Airport Authority facility and location. Work is reviewed for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors. Must be able to work a varied schedule, including outside normal 8 a.m.–5 p.m. business hours for maintenance and upgrades.
