Description The Nurse Midwife is responsible for providing prenatal education and support, attending childbirth, providing encouragement during labor and delivery. Provides care to women during pregnancies and deliveries and calls on a Physician if complications develop. Responsibilities Performs nurse duties related to midwifery including gynecological exams, preconception care, prenatal care, labor and delivery care, and care after birth. Educates women about different types of care available. Emphasizes patient education, active participation, and clear communication between the provider and the woman for an individualized healthcare experience. Advocates for birth education and relies on technology only when medically necessary. Writes prescriptions as needed. Serves as an OB/GYN team member working closely with physicians and other staff to support healthy pregnancies and deliveries. Oversees the medical care of assigned pregnant patients under the supervision of a physician. Assesses a situation, considers alternatives, and chooses an appropriate course of action. Teaches patients about elements of mother‑baby bonding. Has knowledge of nurse midwifery principles and techniques. Participates effectively as a team member. Knowledge of methods ensuring a safe working environment for patient, family, and staff. Handles on‑call responsibilities and flexible office shifts. Qualifications Current New York State license as a Nurse Practitioner or a New York State license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse. Possession of or eligibility for NYS licensure, ACNM/AMCB certification. Working knowledge of electronic medical records. Excellent communication, decision‑making, and problem‑solving skills. Knowledge of applicable state and federal regulations. Physical Demands May spend a great deal of the professional day walking, standing, moving, and manipulating equipment, as well as lifting and moving objects and supplies. Ability to lift 20 pounds. Moving, lifting, or transferring of patients or objects may involve lifting of up to 50 pounds, and may require assisting with weights of more than 100 pounds. Requires the ability to stand for extended periods of time, bend or twist the body, and maintain visual acuity.
