2026-2027 Secretary, HS Special Education Department @ Hastings High School
To contribute to the efficient operation of the High School Special Education Department.
Education/Certification:
- High School graduate or equivalent (GED)
- Qualifies for appropriate paraprofessional certification
Special Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Proficiency in oral and written communication
- Demonstrate interest in and aptitude for work to be performed
- Must be able to type and possess other secretarial skills
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills preferred
Experience:
- District experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Receive telephone calls and record and distribute messages for staff.
- Receive and distribute incoming mail and post all notices for staff attention.
- Type the necessary documents associated with the ARD/IEP process.
- Type memoranda, letters, and purchase orders, as directed by the department chairperson and mail or send them to the appropriate source.
- Maintain fixed assets inventory.
- Provide clerical services as needed to teachers, diagnosticians, and itinerant staff.
- Monitor scheduling, changes, and other transactions of all special education students.
- Maintain special education confidential files.
- Schedule IEP meetings and staffings, prepare ARD Notices and follow up as directed.
- Document all communication with parents within the Success Ed Contact Log (Emails, calls, texts, documents and conversations).
- Translate parent phone calls/conferences for SpEd staff.
- Translate for ARDs.
- Disseminate copies of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal/Individual Education Plan Committee documents to parents and appropriate staff.
- Maintain schedules of all itinerant staff working within the high school.
- Monitor forms and clerical supplies and order materials when appropriate.
- Assure that all office equipment is in working order.
- Maintain good personal relations with instructional staff and communicate effectively with parents and patrons concerning special education services.
- Supervise lunch detention and SAC for students who receive special education services as needed.
- Implement established office procedures in the absence of the campus department chair, including contact with appropriate staff and/or principals, assistant principals and Student Services if immediate administrative action is required.
Other:
- Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Maintain an appropriate level of technology competence to meet the current and future needs of Alief.
- Implement alternative methods of instruction as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of Non-Instructional Paraprofessional Personnel.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals
Posture: Standing, prolonged sitting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing pulling, and twisting
Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; may also require climbing stairs and reaching over head
Lifting: Moderate lifting and carrying (up to 15 pounds); May require occasional heavy lifting and carrying (15-45 pounds)
Environment: May work prolonged or irregular hours; frequent district wide travel; all campuses are temperature controlled with hard surface floors
Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruptions; maintain emotional control under stress

2025-2026 Salary Range Min. $28,007 Mid. $33,512 Max. $39,013 (Based on previous experience)
Salaries are determined by the number of completed and eligible years of service at an accredited school.
Salary is based on 193 days. If working less than 193 days, the salary will be less.
