High School Science Teacher

Southlands Christian Schools is seeking a motivated educator to teach science classes full time at the high school level. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the biological sciences and be prepared to provide rigorous, engaging, and laboratory-rich instruction. This teacher will collaborate with the administration and science department to strengthen a science program that develops scientific knowledge, inquiry skills, and thoughtful engagement with the natural world. Based on enrollment and school needs, the teaching assignment will ideally include several of the courses below:

• Anatomy and Physiology
• Other high school science courses as qualified and assigned

Additional Responsibilities

• Laboratory Instruction and Safety: Plan and supervise hands-on laboratory experiences; maintain a safe, organized learning environment; and ensure the proper use, storage, and disposal of laboratory materials, specimens, chemicals, and equipment.
• Science Program Collaboration: Work with colleagues and administration to support coherent course sequencing, shared resources, student enrichment, and the continued development of the high school science program.

Southlands is seeking a professional who demonstrates a "four-way balance" in the following areas:

• Passion for the Biological Sciences: A genuine love for biology and the life sciences, curiosity about scientific discovery, and a desire to help students understand the complexity and coherence of the natural world.
• Pedagogical Skills: Like any good teacher, he/she is aware of the difference between being skilled in science and knowing how to employ the right instructional strategies to teach students step by step, including inquiry, modeling, data analysis, and laboratory investigation.
• Professionalism: Subject area knowledge is only part of being a good educator. Teachers are part of a community of professionals who can work with teachers, share the load in group events planned by the school, communicate efficiently with the administration, act as a team member, become part of the Southlands family, etc.
• Faith and Science Sensitivity: Ability to teach science n a Christian school environment and exploring the relationship between scientific and faith in a manner sensitive to students from different science-faith perspectives.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY FOR SOUTHLANDS TEACHERS

The teacher is the key to an effective and successful school. As a model learner, adult mentor, disciplinarian and a Christian, the High School Teacher of Southlands Christian Schools will teach one or more academic, vocational, and/or technical subjects to high school students in order to develop spiritual, academic, and social skills.

GENERAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Each teacher should model a Christian walk, relationships, and character. The teacher will apply the Word of God as the final authority and basis for problem resolution between staff and students.
2. Teachers should be committed to personal prayer and attend weekly staff devotional times.
3. Plans courses appropriate to grade level following school curriculum and applicable state requirements.
4. Develops and presents lesson plans using varied methods and appropriate instructional resources.
5. Prepares assignments and tests; monitors, assists, and grades student work.
6. Conducts standardized tests in accordance with school policies and state law.
7. Maintains classroom order and, with administrative staff, administers discipline when necessary.
8. Shares assigned lunchroom, hallway, and lunch-period supervision duties.
9. Counsels students when academic or behavioral problems arise.
10. Maintains records of academic performance, attendance, and student progress; communicates with parents and conducts conferences as needed.
11. Consults with appropriate professionals and parents regarding learning or social concerns and reports suspected child abuse as required by law.
12. Works with the guidance counselor to support student course and college planning.
13. Recommends appropriate student placement or promotion for the following year.
14. Sponsors a student organization or activity as assigned.
15. Participates in faculty meetings, conferences, professional development, and workshops.
16. All other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL DIMENSIONS:

1. Teachers should arrive on time and stay until relieved or students have departed. Students must never be left unsupervised. Teachers should model appropriate conduct, attire, punctuality, responsibility, and positive work habits.
2. Teachers should understand and support school policies and practices, including the parent/student handbook, employee handbook, and annual School Policy Manual updates. Concerns should be addressed through appropriate channels in a manner conducive to resolution and harmony.
3. Teachers will follow all school safety guidelines and report hazards to the School Safety Coordinator.

This position is classified as exempt, meaning more than 50 percent of the employee’s time is spent performing exempt job duties consistent with this job description. If the employee finds that actual job duties change from those described here so that the employee is not performing exempt duties more than 50 percent of the time, the employee must immediately inform management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Single Subject Teaching Credential.
2. Willingness to continue professional courses as required according to ACSI guidelines.
3. Desire to work with secondary school-aged children; specialized training for dealing with that age group is a definite asset.
4. Excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft software and other LMS software a plus.
5. TB Clearance within last four years.

7.Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986: An Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) will be required along with the supporting documents listed on the I-9 form.

4. Keep the board informed on the issues, needs, and operation of the school system at all levels.

6. Is a positive leader to the school and staff and seeks to establish a positive rapport and communication with each staff members, prospective families, guardians, and agents.
7. Respect professional ethics that require confidentiality concerning the sharing of information about students, parents or staff.
8. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to organize and prioritize work flow, organizational skills to meet deadlines and work independently.
9. Thorough knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment.
10. Excellent computer skills. Proficient in Microsoft software and other LMS software a plus.
11. Some knowledge of departmental functions and organization.
12. Skill in composition, setting up and typing accurately and with reasonable speed, a variety of correspondence, reports and other materials.
13. Ability to create and maintain relationships and demonstrate an ability to work effectively with administrators, faculty, staff and students.

Each teacher contributes toward a successful whole. Therefore, each teacher should relate in warm and supportive ways with other staff members. Problems should be resolved through exercise principles described in Matthew 18.
