Alaska Youth Steward (AYS) Program Coordinator Position Summary The Alaska Youth Stewards (AYS) Program Coordinator is responsible for planning, implementing, and supervising YTT’s AYS program while supporting year‑round Tribal Conservation District objectives and long‑term stewardship capacity. During the AYS season (June–August), this position serves as the primary supervisor and safety lead for youth crew members, ensuring a structured, trauma‑informed, and culturally grounded work experience. Outside of the AYS season, the role focuses on program development, documentation, coordination, and capacity‑building work aligned with the long‑term stewardship strategy of Yakutat Tlingit Tribe, Yak‑Tat Kwaan Inc., and the City & Borough of Yakutat, helping build a sustainable youth‑to‑workforce pipeline and strengthening YTT’s environmental and conservation infrastructure in alignment with regional and national Conservation District standards. Essential Functions Serve as direct supervisor and Crew Lead for AYS Crew Members. Plan and manage daily and weekly work schedules, balancing field and office activities. Enforce all safety standards, PPE use, vehicle protocols, and field procedures. Conduct daily safety briefings, check‑ins, and end‑of‑day debriefs. Ensure youth work remains supervised, age‑appropriate, and within approved scope. Implement trauma‑informed practices, including predictable routines and gradual increases in responsibility. Coordinate with Environmental, Cultural Heritage, and partner agencies (e.g., USFS, NPS, CBY). Facilitate cultural learning opportunities in coordination with appropriate staff and knowledge holders. Track attendance, performance, and progress; provide coaching and documentation as needed. Lead midpoint and end‑of‑season evaluations for youth crew members. Oversee completion of the AYS Monitoring Summary and required reporting. Support Tribal Conservation District Network (TCDN) objectives, including: program documentation onboarding materials SOP refinement reporting and compliance support Maintain and update AYS program manuals, calendars, and training materials. Assist with planning and coordination for future AYS seasons. Support integration of youth pathways with Indigenous Guardians, Environmental programs, and Culture Camp. Assist with data organization, documentation, and reporting aligned with TCDN expectations. Coordinate with Tribal Operations and Environmental leadership on capacity‑building initiatives. Participate in regional TCD training, meetings, or technical assistance activities as appropriate. Contribute to grant planning, workplans, and funding alignment related to youth stewardship and conservation capacity. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Basic technical and digital literacy, including use of Microsoft 365 and other tools for documentation, scheduling, and communication. Professional judgment and accountability, including the ability to exercise stop‑work authority and to escalate concerns appropriately. Safety practices and risk management in outdoor or operational environments. Cultural respect, professionalism, and Tribal values. Yakutat, Yaakwdaat Tlingit culture, or Southeast Alaska ecosystems. Tribal Conservation Districts or TCD Network programs. Youth workforce or internship programs. Customer service principles. Skills in: Time management and prioritizing and organizing work. Problem solving. Interpersonal relations and customer service. Youth supervision and mentorship skills (or a desire to learn), including the ability to set clear expectations, provide coaching, and support youth development in a work setting. Strong safety awareness and risk management ability, particularly in outdoor, field‑based, or operational environments. Program coordination and organizational skills, with the ability to manage schedules, documentation, and multiple priorities across seasonal workflows. Trauma‑informed and culturally respectful leadership, including the ability to create predictable routines, respond appropriately to youth needs, and model professionalism. Field readiness and adaptability, including comfort working outdoors in variable weather conditions and adjusting plans as conditions change. Ability to: Clearly communicate, both verbal and written, with the ability to work effectively with youth, families, Tribal staff, leadership, and external partners. Document and report properly, including tracking attendance, activities, safety briefings, and contributing to program reports and summaries. Have a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work across departments (Environmental, Tribal Operations, Culture Camp, Indigenous Guardians) and support shared goals. Work independently without supervision, as well as prioritize workload. Work Environment / Physical Demands Seasonal variation in workload, including physically demanding outdoor work during summer months. Fieldwork in variable weather conditions. Occasional evenings or weekend work during peak season or special events. This position carries stop‑work authority during AYS activities when safety concerns arise. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Supervisory and Management Responsibility Reports to the Tribal Operations Director. This position functions as a first‑level supervisor with responsibility for overseeing assigned staff and daily operations in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include participating in hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; addressing employee concerns and disciplinary matters; and resolving operational issues. Minimum Qualifications Must be 18 years of age or older. High school diploma or GED required. One (1) year of progressively responsible administrative support experience, performing similar duties. Must be able to pass a National Criminal and State background check. This position has been designated as having regular contact or control over Indian children and will require an additional FBI criminal background check. Valid Alaska Driver’s License.
