General Statement of Job The Deputy Sheriff, under the direct supervision of the Sergeant, performs generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff of Martin County. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations. Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members. The Deputy Sheriff is a sworn officer and, as with all sworn personnel, has the power of arrest and is capable of performing the tasks associated with sworn status. Examples of Duties Essential Functions Specific Duties and Responsibilities The care, custody, control and movement of prisoners within the Courtroom and Courthouse. Provide security in the Courthouse. Coordinating Courtroom activity. Requesting movement of prisoners. Verifying warrants. Answering/direction calls from the general public. Inspecting prisoners for safety and wellbeing. When not handling major and subordinate duties, incumbents are expected to use their self‑directed work time in an efficient manner by self‑initiating performance on those priority tasks assigned to this position by command personnel. The incumbent is expected to accept the responsibility for knowing his/her routine job assignments and performing them without having to be consistently told to do so. Court Security Deputies shall also perform related duties as assigned by their superiors. Additional Duties Performs other related duties as required. Typical Qualifications Minimum Education and Training Graduation from high school or an equivalent program. Minimum Qualifications And Standards Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license. Certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission. Supplemental Information Physical Demands Frequent stooping and bending required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires color perception. Requires the ability to see, hear, and speak. Incumbent must be able to defend themselves, defend others, or otherwise gain control of physically resistant individuals. Requires the ability to walk for extended periods of time. Work Environment Work conditions are primarily of an indoor nature. Few tasks require heavy lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying heavy loads. Mental alertness is very important because of the need to make critical decisions concerning personnel and their operations. However, as a sworn member with the responsibility to enforce violations of law, physical and mental demands can change dramatically within a few seconds, taxing the maximum of human endurance. Therefore, incumbents must maintain a physical and mental state of fitness and readiness that enables them to handle (with minimal force and often without assistance) occasional contacts and involvements with dangerous and potentially dangerous people and equipment. Florida Retirement System (FRS) Employee must complete 8 years to become vested. In addition to the FRS Pension Plan, we also have an FRS Investment Plan, in which an employee must complete 1 year to become vested. Employees are required to pay 3% into their FRS retirement regardless of which plan they choose. Health Insurance Florida Blue – Self‑insured Plan. MCSO contributes 75% of the total premium, with the employee contributing 25%. Benefit‑eligible employees currently have the option to choose between two different medical plans offered through Florida Blue, for them and their dependents. Dental Insurance Delta Dental. MCSO contributes 75% of the total premium, with the employee contributing 25%. Benefit‑eligible employees currently have the option to choose between two different dental plans offered through Delta Dental, for them and their dependents. Vision Insurance Humana Vision Care. The employee contributes 100% of the total premium. Life Insurance Standard Life Insurance Company, Inc. and CIGNA. Long‑Term Disability Insurance Standard Life Insurance Company, Inc. MCSO contributes 100% of the premium for this benefit. Eligibility Questions 01. Any Driver's License suspension in the last three (3) years. (Suspension for financial responsibility will not be an automatic disqualifier) 02. Any conviction of, or pled to, "Driving Under The Influence," as defined in F.S.S. 316.193 within the last 3 years. 03. Any illegal drug use including marijuana within the last year. 04. Any controlled substance (cocaine, crack, heroin, etc.) use within the last five years. 05. Any hallucinogenic (LSD, PSP, Mushrooms, Ecstasy, etc.) use within the last five years. 06. Any HGH / Steroid usage within the last year. 07. Any sales and/or deliveries of any illegal substance in adult life. 08. Any discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States that is dishonorable, bad conduct, and other than honorable. (Uncharacterized will be reviewed on a case‑by‑case basis)
