Law Clerk- Legal Aid Society of Hawaii - Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center

 

The Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is Hawaiʻi’s oldest and largest non-profit public interest law firm with offices statewide. Through its dedicated staff, Legal Aid helps ensure justice and fairness for all by providing civil legal aid to the most vulnerable in our society. The Hawaii Immigrant Justice Center at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi provides direct legal services to immigrants with a focus on providing services to survivors of domestic violence, human trafficking and other serious crimes. 

 

Position Description

 

Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi is seeking two part-time law clerks (10 hours per week) to work directly under Legal Aid immigration attorneys to assist with client representation, legal research and document preparation.

 

Responsibilities for this position includes:

• Conducting legal research
• Drafting memos
• Participating in client intakes and interviews
• Case preparation for affirmative filings with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
• Assisting with preparation for immigration hearings at immigration court.
• Participate in outreach and education efforts.

 

Requirements

• Currently enrolled at an accredited law school as a 3L or 2L at the beginning of the internship
• Located on Oahu
• Demonstrable commitment to social justice and public interest
• Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with diverse team of co-workers. 
  
• Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.
• Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.
• Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
• Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.

 

Compensation : $22.94 - $24.80/hour commensurate with experience. Paid Vacation and Sick Leave.
