Senior Bookkeeper

Position Summary

Our client, a steel framing manufacturer in Gary, Indiana, is seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day accounting operations and help ensure accurate, timely financial reporting. This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys both the details and the bigger picture.

Reporting to the Controller, this position is responsible for bookkeeping and accounting activities from transaction processing through month-end close. The Senior Bookkeeper will help maintain strong financial controls, investigate discrepancies, improve processes, and provide useful financial information to support business decisions.

This is a full-time position that will work onsite for at least the first 90 days, with the possibility of a hybrid schedule thereafter.

Key Responsibilities

Full-Cycle Bookkeeping and Accounting

• Manage the complete accounting cycle, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, customer invoicing, collections, cash receipts, and vendor payments.
• Complete weekly check and ACH runs.
• Prepare rebate calculations and accruals.
• Assist in preparing monthly commissions.
• Maintain the general ledger and ensure transactions are recorded accurately and on time.
• Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules.
• Perform bank and cash reconciliations and monitor daily cash activity.
• Complete monthly bookkeeping and support the month-end and year-end close processes.
• Investigate discrepancies, resolve accounting issues, and follow items through to completion.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

• Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules.
• Review financial results and identify trends, variances, and items requiring management attention.
• Assist with cash flow reporting, budgeting, and forecasting as needed.
• Develop and improve reports that give leadership greater visibility into financial and operating results.
• Recommend practical process improvements that strengthen efficiency, accuracy, and internal controls.
• Prepare ad hoc account analyses as requested from time to time by company management.

Manufacturing and Inventory Accounting

• Maintain inventory-related accounting records and reconciliations.
• Assist with cycle counts, inventory analysis, and inventory valuation activities.
• Partner with operations to understand inventory movement, production flow, and cost drivers.
• Support cost tracking, variance review, and operational reporting for management.

Payroll, Tax, and Compliance

• Process or oversee payroll and related accounting entries.
• Maintain documentation for payroll taxes, sales and use taxes, and other compliance requirements.
• Prepare organized supporting documentation for audits, tax filings, and external advisors.
• Maintain accurate financial records, schedules, and supporting documentation.

Required Qualifications

• Five or more years of progressive bookkeeping or accounting experience.
• Strong understanding of full-cycle bookkeeping through month-end close.
• Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, accruals, payroll, and financial statement preparation.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to identify issues, ask thoughtful questions, and recommend process improvements.
• Excellent attention to detail with the ability to understand broader business impacts.
• Clear communication and collaboration skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting or ERP software.

Preferred Qualifications

• Manufacturing, inventory, or cost accounting experience.
• Experience working in a small to mid-sized company where team members manage multiple responsibilities.
• Experience with Invex ERP by Invera a huge plus.
• Associate or bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Experience supporting audits, budgeting, cash flow reporting, or lender reporting.

Work Environment

This is a collaborative, hands-on environment. Occasional additional hours may be required during month-end, year-end close, and reporting periods.

 

Salary: $60k-70k
