Community Corrections Officer 2 (or CCO1) Community Corrections Division, Tacoma, WA Salary depends on qualifications. The minimum starting salary for a CCO1 placement begins at Step G ($5,338 monthly). Location: North Pierce County Special Assault Unit, 1016 South 28th Street, Tacoma, WA. Shift hours: 0800‑1700 Monday‑Friday. This full‑time, non‑permanent appointment is expected to last approximately four months. Overview Community Corrections Officers (CCOs) supervise individuals who have been released from incarceration and are subject to community supervision. In this role, you will work in the North and South Pierce County Special Assault Units (SAUs), supervising Level 1–3 sex offenders and those convicted of kidnapping who must register with the Sheriff. The position supports agency mission to ensure public safety by providing effective supervision, accountability, intervention, and safe reentry into the community. Responsibilities Supervise criminal supervised individuals (S/Is) ordered to community supervision per Washington State law, Interstate Compact Rules/Regulations, and agency policy. Conduct investigations, searches, issue warrants, and make arrests as needed. Complete intake and administer risk, needs, and substance‑abuse assessments. Maintain electronic and hard‑copy files, reports, and documentation. Engage with S/Is to promote positive change using communication strategies such as Motivational Interviewing and Principles of Effective Interventions. Enforce supervision conditions and the law, including presenting accurate written documentation and oral testimony, making sanction recommendations, and ensuring proper chain of custody for evidence. Exercise sound judgment regarding the use of department‑issued firearms, including safety procedures and proper documentation. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications – CCO1 Ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm. Unrestricted vehicle operator’s license valid in Washington State. Willingness and ability to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds, review graphic materials, and remain objective. Demonstrated ability through college‑level coursework or experience in three or more of the following areas: Written Communication – clear, factual, concise, grammatically correct work. Critical Thinking – evaluate situations, assess risk, and make informed decisions. Analytical Reasoning – interpret data and develop solutions. Conflict Resolution – manage interactions, promote collaboration, and seek constructive outcomes. Situational Awareness – remain calm in crisis and document details. Problem Solving – identify causes, assess outcomes, and implement solutions. Organizational Skills – prioritize, plan, and manage time. Independent Work – learn duties, meet standards, and seek guidance when needed. Flexibility – incorporate new information and adapt to changes in laws or procedures. AND must meet one of the following educational or experiential criteria: High school diploma or GED AND at least four years of qualifying experience. Associate or technical degree AND two years of qualifying experience. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. OR equivalent combination totaling four years of education and/or experience. Qualifications – CCO2 Ability to carry and properly utilize a department‑issued firearm. Unrestricted vehicle operator’s license valid in Washington State. Willingness and ability to work with individuals with criminal backgrounds, review graphic materials, and remain objective. Demonstrated ability through college‑level coursework or professional experience in three or more of the following areas: Field visits, written correspondence, and reports. Case assessment and recommendation-making. Resource referral and court presentation. Risk factor assessment and treatment plan facilitation. Record maintenance and progress tracking. Assisting S/Is who lack independent access to community resources. Case‑management decision-making under stress and interpreting legal documents. Computer and software data handling. Caseload management with conflicting priorities. Community resource identification and stakeholder communication. Independent work and collaboration with stakeholders. AND must meet one of the following educational or experiential criteria: One year experience as a CCO in Washington State DOC. Associate or technical degree AND three years of qualifying experience. Bachelor’s degree AND one year of qualifying experience. OR equivalent combination totaling five years of education and/or experience.
