Job Summary

This position supports Departmental purposes by providing skilled technical laboratory support to the assigned department in accordance with California Business and Professions Code Section 1269 and under the direct and constant supervision of a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS). Performs scheduled maintenance, testing, and quality control processes on complex automated equipment and instruments, including the preparation of reagents. Ensures timely and accurate specimen receipt and accessioning and prepares and/or processes various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material for analysis. Oversees inventory for assigned department to include monitoring and ordering supplies. Supports the department by answering telephones, filing, and required recordkeeping. May provide laboratory technical instruction and training to new Clinical Laboratory Scientists, Residents, and CLS students.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent or equivalent work experience
• Minimum three (3) years' experience as an HLT I or equivalent in an accredited clinical laboratory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology (anatomy, medical conditions, symptoms, test methods, treatment).
• Ability to maintain records accurately and legibly.
• Demonstrated competency achievement to operate technical equipment and analytical systems used to perform work accurately and proficiently.
• Demonstrated manual dexterity.
• Ability to maintain patient/coworker safety and comfort through demonstrated safety precaution knowledge when working in a laboratory environment.
• Proficient knowledge of personal computer, word processing, data management, spreadsheet software, Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
• Ability to interact professionally with patients, visitors, doctors, hospital staff and coworkers
• Ability to maintain the security of confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Associate's Degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology.
• Experience with principles of quality control and quality assurance in order to recognize processes that could lead to test failures.
• Experience writing clear technical reports and/or policies and procedures.
• Experience with regulatory requirements pertaining to the clinical laboratory.
• Knowledge of all safety precautions necessary when working with chemicals, equipment (mechanical and electrical), biological samples, radioactive materials, etc.
• Demonstrated skill in developing and maintaining files/records, such as reagent preparation requirements, quality control processes and protocols, instrument maintenance records, procedure development, etc.
• Ability to organize workflow to meet the expected turnaround time for assigned laboratory tasks.
• Organizational and time management skills to independently manage an extensive and varied workload and meet multiple deadlines; achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous projects.
• Ability to adhere to detail when performing work assignments.
• Ability to correlate data (clerical or technical) and evaluate results for reasonableness.
• Skill in performing under conditions of frequent interruptions, distractions, and heavy workload while maintaining self-control, accuracy and productivity.
• Ability to work well under pressure and remain flexible in changing work environment.
• Demonstrated skill in listening to instructions or information and conveying awareness and understanding or lack of understanding as appropriate.
• Ability to perform activities such as moving equipment for repair; moving gas tanks; transportation of reagents, blood products, or supplies; pipetting, etc. as required.
• Ability to respond clearly, concisely, and cooperatively to questions from other technologists, unlicensed staff, or supervisory staff regarding how procedures/duties were or should be performed, validity of test results, etc.Ability to utilize effective listening and questioning techniques to educate trainees, residents and physicians in clear and concise manner.
• Ability to exercise judgment, tact and discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information and situations.
• Ability to function and work in a diverse work environment.

Department Overview

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in public health, education, technology and research. Work Environment
