Library Media Technician

Salary All new hires will be placed at the starting salary step of this classification ($24.79). Employees are eligible for a step increase on their anniversary date each year, up to the maximum step 5 of this salary range ($28.74). Job Summary Persons in these positions normally work 1.7 to 3.5 hours per day during the school session. Under direction of a school principal or other certificated employee, they implement and oversee the clerical operation and maintenance of a school library, provide a welcoming environment for students, assist students in locating and selecting books, use an automated library management system to process and maintain books and instructional media materials—primarily at the elementary level—and perform related work as required. Essential Duties Assists students or teachers in locating and selecting books and using reference materials in a computerized library system. Processes new books by entering data into an automated library management system, files catalog cards in manual systems, labels books according to designated reading levels, and issues overdue notices. Creates and updates bulletin board and other seasonal theme displays to emphasize new books and book jackets relative to current curriculum and calendar. Contacts teachers and arranges schedule for classes to visit the library, with assistance from the principal. Reads stories to students, as requested by teachers. Trains and supervises student and adult volunteers who issue, shelve, label, and repair books and otherwise assist in operating the library, primarily on an automated library management system. Maintains an ongoing inventory of books, weeding and discarding worn or unused books. Assists in ordering library books and supplies. Maintains library in a neat and orderly condition. Education and Experience High school graduation or equivalent diploma and some experience in library or office operations. Experience working with elementary‑aged students is highly desirable. Experience using a computerized library management system is highly desirable. Any other combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered. All candidates must meet the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirement for this position. This can be met in one of three ways: Possession of an associate’s degree or higher. Completion of 48 full semester units earned at an accredited college or university. Having a high school diploma or GED equivalent and passing the ESSA exam. Knowledge of Library practices and techniques. Standard library reference sources. Basic computer operation and related software. Basic principles of the Dewey Decimal System. Correct labeling and shelving processes for fiction and non‑fiction books and materials. Library inventory principles and practices in an automated environment. Ability to Learn and manage an automated school library with a moderate level of independence. Assist students in selecting appropriate books for their level of achievement. Assist students in the use of library resources and references. Train and supervise student and adult volunteers. Learn and apply library rules, regulations, and policies. Provide a welcoming environment for students to develop an appreciation for literature and reading. Work cooperatively with students and staff. Veteran’s Credit Veterans shall receive an additional five (5) points added to their final percentage score on an open eligibility list as prescribed by Education Code, Section 45296. “Veteran” means any person who has served in the United States armed forces in time of war, or national emergency declared by the President, and has been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. At least thirty (30) days of active service are required to obtain veteran preference points. Disabled veterans shall receive an additional ten (10) points. Proof of disability must be on record with the United States Veterans Administration. Further eligibility may be granted based on future changes to the law and verification from the Veteran’s Administration or the United States Office of Personnel Management. Proof of qualifying military service must be furnished prior to establishment of the eligibility list. Veterans may be credited preference points only to obtain initial employment; thereafter only seniority points may be granted.
