We are looking for a Staff Accountant to join a non-profit organization in Saint Paul, Minnesota. This position partners closely with the Finance Director to support accurate financial records, reliable reporting, and timely month-end close activities. The role also contributes to grant accounting, billing, and audit preparation while helping strengthen financial processes across the organization.

Responsibilities:

• Manage general ledger activity by preparing and posting journal entries, maintaining supporting documentation, and completing account reconciliations.

• Support monthly and year-end close processes by recording revenue accurately, reviewing subledger activity, and helping produce complete financial statements.

• Administer cash-related accounting tasks, track receivables, and follow up on outstanding invoices and funding payments to maintain timely collections.

• Prepare invoices and funding requests for grants and contracts, and coordinate billing schedules with government agencies and other funding sources.

• Build and maintain grant cost tracking schedules, monitor allowable expenses, and help maximize reimbursement in accordance with contract terms and funding rules.

• Partner with program and operational staff to develop grant budgets, answer financial questions, and provide guidance on compliant use of restricted funds.

• Compile audit workpapers and respond to requests for supporting documentation during annual audit activities.

• Oversee sales tax reporting requirements and contribute to stronger procedures, internal controls, and written process documentation.

• Provide backup support for other finance functions and participate in team meetings, trainings, and cross-functional initiatives as needed.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance with at least 5 years of relevant experience, or 8+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience in place of a degree.
• Hands-on experience with general ledger accounting, journal entries, reconciliations, and accounts receivable processes.
• Strong background in fund accounting, grant compliance, and contract reporting, ideally within a non-profit environment.
• Proficiency with PC-based accounting systems; experience with Sage Intacct is strongly preferred.
• Advanced Excel skills and solid working knowledge of Microsoft Office and web-based tools.
• Ability to work independently, manage multiple deadlines, and investigate discrepancies with sound judgment.
• Experience supporting managers with budgets, financial reporting, and grant-related analysis.
• Knowledge of sales tax reporting; exposure to corporate tax concepts is helpful.
