We set and achieve bold ambitions in our fight against the world’s most devastating diseases, united in our commitment to confronting the largest public health challenges of our day and improving the lives of patients for generations to come.  As a Senior Scientist, HIV Discovery Virology, at Gilead you will work in a highly collaborative and dynamic research environment to support the discovery and development of novel long-acting agents for HIV treatment and prevention. Primary responsibilities will include leading a wide breadth of preclinical studies to characterize investigational small and/or large molecule therapeutic agents, as well as evaluating new targets and therapeutic strategies in a fast-paced team environment. The successful candidate would be expected to:Independently develop scientific hypotheses and design, execute, and optimize cell-based virology and immunology assays to support the discovery and development of HIV therapeutics while gaining proficiency in strategic decision makingFunction as a core member in one or more multidisciplinary project teams to support essential research activities within the HIV research portfolioLead, support and/or manage external collaborations that complement research goalsMake effective use of literature and external CROs to complement research activitiesSupport the drafting of regulatory documents, manuscripts, patent filings and internal/external presentationsRegularly document research findings in electronic notebook entriesRegularly prepare and present clear and concise research updates at project team meetings and to the senior leadership teamIncreasingly support the training, development and/or management of more junior scientistsReadily integrate and interact effectively within the Virology group and across the Research organizationGilead is a fast-paced, data-driven, scientifically rigorous organization with inclusive culture and strong motivation to solve unmet medical needs and the role will suit a scientist who is able to thrive in this type of environment.Knowledge, Experience and Skills:Bachelors in a relevant life science discipline (virology, infectious disease, immunology, cellular and molecular biology) and 8+ years of experience required ORMasters in a relevant life science discipline (virology, infectious disease, immunology, cellular and molecular biology)and 6+ years of experience required ORPhD in a relevant life science discipline (virology, infectious disease, immunology, cellular and molecular biology) and 2+ years of post-PhD industry experience, ideally focused on innovative research in virology, viral immunology, biologics, drug development, and/or cell therapyStrong track record of scientific achievements, including publications, external presentations and/or significant contributions to the advancement of preclinical candidate(s) into development Experience in assay development, ability to evaluate data quality, recognize anomalous results, interpret experimental outcomes while defining data limitations and next steps is essentialHands-on experience in primary cell isolation, immune cell functional assays, antiviral assays, multi-color flow cytometry, ELISA/Luminex, molecular biology and/or genomics techniques, and automation is highly desiredExcellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills requiredPreferred: PhD in a relevant life science discipline (virology, infectious disease, immunology, cellular and molecular biology) is strongly preferred (advanced degree)The salary range for this position is: $169,320.00 - $219,120.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package.
