6TH GRADE TEACHER - 195 DAY

Job Summary This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades 6-8. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities; performs related duties as assigned. The teacher serves as a general‑education middle‑school classroom teacher and may lead single‑ or multi‑grade, subject‑oriented, or specialty classes, or work in science or industrial arts labs requiring heightened monitoring. Essential Responsibilities Assesses student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes. Plans and implements appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials; provides appropriate learning experiences; manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement; utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning. Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure the environment is conducive to learning and assists in managing student behavior in other school areas. Coordinates instructional activities with other professional staff, both school‑based and non‑school‑based, to maximize learning opportunities. Works in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or may make off‑school‑site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors. Participates in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned. Fosters partnerships and ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student progress. Communicates continually with students on instructional expectations to keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations. Assigns work to and supervises instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers. Serves at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant, as required. Supports or participates in school‑wide student activities and social events. Monitors student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reporting to the appropriate administrator as required. Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities as needed. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Knowledge of the instructional process and the content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned. Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development. Knowledge of Prince William County curriculum, school‑division mission, goals, and organization. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs. Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students. Skill in oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills. Proficiency in relevant content areas, such as foreign language, music, or visual arts, as required by the assigned specialty. Education and Certification Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in education or related field and eligibility for the Virginia State Certification Program. State educational credentials with endorsements required for teaching assignments. Valid Virginia automobile operator’s license if assigned off‑site duties or itinerant responsibilities. Work Environment The work environment is primarily indoor, conducted in a standard office, classroom, or indoor setting.
