Speech Therapist (SLP) - Inpatient - Pool

Major Responsibilities Interprets physician referrals and conducts speech and language evaluations of patients with a variety of speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders. Establishes written care plans and implements individualized treatment based on evaluation results and functional goals, utilizing appropriate techniques. Monitors and evaluates outcomes, adjusting plans as needed, and provides status updates to physicians and team members. Identifies factors affecting patients’ physical and psychosocial comfort and addresses these needs. Plans for and completes patient discharge, including written home programs, patient/family teaching, referrals for community services, transition planning, and equipment ordering as appropriate. Communicates and collaborates with stakeholders to achieve optimal care. Completes all required documentation per department policy and accreditation standards, including patient evaluations, progress notes, team conference reports, and discharge summaries. Records patient care and progress for each assigned patient. Performs daily statistics, billing, and scheduling, applies insurance authorization guidelines, and respects billing and documentation policies, procedures, and timelines. Maintains a clean and orderly work area, performs manual techniques, patient positioning, and transportation duties, and demonstrates skill with modalities, exercise equipment, and other devices as per orientation checklist. Promotes patient safety through participation in safety initiatives and adherence to infection control measures. Engages in performance improvement activities to resolve patient care problems and improve quality. Manages assigned caseload, informs leadership of coverage needs, and assists with coverage as required by department and regional needs. Pursues professional growth through continuing education, department in‑services, and literature review. Orients new staff to policies, participates in staff evaluation, and may supervise non‑licensed personnel per compliance requirements. Supports the student clinical education program by monitoring, observing, and directing at least one student per year when available. Minimum Job Requirements Education Master’s degree in Speech Pathology from an accredited school (or educational requirements commensurate with the date of graduation). Maintains continuing education requirements as mandated by applicable state professional standards. Certification / Registration / License Licensed Speech Language Pathologist in the state of employment. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers (obtained within 90 days unless otherwise determined). Certificate of Clinical Competence from American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) or eligibility for Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY). Work Experience No experience required. Knowledge / Skills / Abilities Intermediate computer skills Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organization skills Strong decision‑making and problem‑solving skills Successful completion of all competency assessments related to patient care in accordance with site standards Annual educational requirements for hospital‑based certifications (e.g., DNV, CARF, or others) Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills for age‑appropriate patient care, including principles of growth and development across the lifespan and assessment of age‑specific needs Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, and squat throughout the workday. Lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, 10 lbs. from waist to overhead, and 40 lbs. at waist height over a decent distance. Push/pull with up to 30 lbs. of force. Perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present. Use hands for simple grasping (5–15 lbs.) 20% of the workday; pushing/pulling up to 75–100 lbs. 10% of the day. Perform fine manipulation of hands during massage and joint mobilization. Maintain functional use of senses for effective communication. Exposure to electrical and chemical hazards as well as blood and body fluids; require protective clothing as needed. Position may require travel, exposing the individual to road and weather hazards.
