Athletic Trainer
Responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive athletic medical program for all school-sponsored athletic activities. The primary role is to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes through the prevention, diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of sports-related injuries and illnesses. The Athletic Trainer serves as the critical liaison between student-athletes, coaches, parents, and medical professionals.
Education/Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Athletic Training from an accredited college or university (Master's preferred);
Must hold and maintain active certification in good standing from the Board of Certification (BOC) for the Athletic Trainer;
Must possess a valid State of Michigan Athletic Trainer License or applicable state license;
Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for healthcare professionals.
Training/Experience/Responsibilities:
Provide preventative care, including taping, bracing, and bandaging, prior to practices and competitions;
Advise coaches and physical education staff regarding injury prevention, proper conditioning programs, warm-up exercises, and the selection and fitting of protective equipment;
Monitor environmental conditions (extreme heat, etc.) and advise the Athletic Director and coaches on the safety of practicing or playing;
Provide on-site medical coverage for home athletic events, specified away games, and daily practices;
Act as the first responder to evaluate acute injuries and medical emergencies on the field or court;
Implement and coordinate the district's Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for all athletic venues;
Conduct baseline concussion testing and execute the district's return-to-play concussion protocols;
Develop, supervise, and evaluate individualized rehabilitation and reconditioning programs for injured student-athletes to safely restore them to pre-injury levels;
Administer therapeutic modalities (ice, heat, etc.) in accordance with state laws and physician guidelines;
Make independent, clinical decisions regarding a student-athlete's physical readiness to return to practice or competition;
Maintain accurate, confidential medical records on all injuries, treatments administered, physician referrals, and return-to-play clearances in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA regulations;
Manage the athletic training room to ensure it is a safe, clean, and orderly environment;
Inventory, maintain, and requisition all medical and first-aid supplies within the allocated athletic training budget;
Ensure all coaches are up to date on required CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications;
Communicate injury status, treatment plans, and necessary follow-up care clearly with parents/guardians, coaches, and physicians;
Counsel student-athletes and their families on seeking proper medical assistance and navigating insurance claims;
Initiate and supervise a "Student Athletic Trainer" program to educate high school students interested in sports medicine;
Coordinate with the school nurse to provide CPR training for school employees;
Attend and assist with the district's Free Physical Night for student-athletes;
Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with students;
Ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
Ability to relate and work effectively with parents, staff, students, and the public in a multicultural and multiracial community; Knowledge and awareness of own cultural identity and how this influences behavior, and desire to learn about the cultural identity of others;
Ability to establish and nurture an environment that promotes cultural competence and equitable treatment of staff, students, and patrons of the District;
Ability to recognize that each person is a unique individual even as we celebrate their group cultural heritage.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands:
This position requires non-traditional hours. The Athletic Trainer must be available to work afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays to cover practices, games, and tournaments;
Work is performed both indoors (gymnasiums, training rooms) and outdoors in varying, sometimes extreme, weather conditions;
The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and the physical ability to assist or lift injured student-athletes. Must be able to carry medical kits, water coolers, and emergency equipment (up to 50 lbs) across fields.
