About The Cancer Foundation
The Cancer Foundation is a mission-driven nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating the financial burden of cancer for individuals and families across 25 counties in Northeast Georgia. Through our Financial Assistance and Nutritional Assistance programs, we provide practical support to patients facing the overwhelming costs and disruptions associated with cancer treatment.
We believe financial relief is a form of care. Every payment processed, donation reconciled, and financial report prepared helps ensure that resources reach people when they need them most.
Position Summary
The Director of Finance is The Cancer Foundations lead accounting professional and is responsible for managing the organizations day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting support, payroll, accounts payable and receivable, donation and gift reconciliation, financial assistance disbursements, grant and restricted fund tracking, audit preparation, and internal controls.
This is a hands-on, non-supervisory role in a lean nonprofit environment. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, mission-driven, and comfortable managing both strategic financial oversight and high-volume transaction work. In the last fiscal year, the Foundation processed more than 2,500 financial assistance transactions, making accuracy, timeliness, and sound judgment essential to this role.
Key Responsibilities
The Director of Finance will:
- Maintain accurate financial records, including the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash activity, and supporting schedules.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for leadership, the Board of Directors, auditors, grantors, and other stakeholders.
- Manage reconciliations for bank accounts, credit cards, investment accounts, payment platforms, donations, and financial records.
- Process payroll, benefits-related accounting, accounts payable, deposits, invoices, and routine disbursements.
- Manage financial assistance payments to approved payees such as landlords, utility providers, insurance providers, transportation vendors, and other service providers.
- Ensure financial assistance payments are accurate, timely, properly approved, and fully documented.
- Record and reconcile donations, grants, donor-advised fund gifts, online giving, workplace giving, in-kind contributions, and other revenue.
- Track restricted funds, donor intent, grant income and expenses, and designated revenue.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, budget-to-actual reporting, and financial planning in partnership with the Executive Director.
- Coordinate annual audit preparation and provide accurate, audit-ready documentation.
- Maintain strong internal controls, financial policies, accounting procedures, and documentation practices.
- Work closely with leadership, development staff, program staff, vendors, auditors, grantors, and external partners.
- Identify practical opportunities to improve workflows, systems, accuracy, and efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and progressively responsible experience.
- At least 5 years of accounting experience, including full-cycle accounting responsibilities.
- Experience preparing financial statements, managing reconciliations, maintaining the general ledger, and supporting month-end and year-end close.
- Experience with accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, payroll, and disbursements.
- Experience with donation processing, gift reconciliation, financial documentation, audit preparation, and compliance-oriented recordkeeping.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and sound accounting controls.
- Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel.
- Ability to work independently in a small, mission-driven organization.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, communication, and follow-through skills.
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professional judgment.
- Empathy, patience, and professionalism when communicating with individuals experiencing financial or emotional stress.
- Commitment to The Cancer Foundations mission and sensitivity to the needs of people affected by cancer.
Preferred Qualifications
- Nonprofit accounting experience, especially with restricted funds, grants, in-kind support, and donor-related revenue.
- Experience with Ramp, Gusto, Salesforce, Bloomerang CRM, or similar systems.
- Experience supporting external audits, board financial reporting, and grant reporting.
- Experience in a healthcare, human services, or mission-based nonprofit environment.
- Experience with ACH platforms, online bill pay tools, payment portals, and integrated accounting or fundraising workflows.
- Experience improving accounting processes, documentation, or internal controls in a small organization.
Why This Role Matters
This is not a traditional back-office accounting position. At The Cancer Foundation, accounting directly supports the delivery of the mission. A rent payment can help a patient stay housed during treatment. A utility payment can help a family keep the lights on while income is disrupted. Accurate reporting protects donor trust and ensures resources are used responsibly.
The right candidate will bring precision, accountability, compassion, and sound financial judgment to work that changes lives every day.
How to Apply
Interested candidates should submit a resume and a tailored cover letter describing their relevant experience and interest in The Cancer Foundations mission. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Employment is contingent upon a successful background check.
Equal Opportunity Statement
The Cancer Foundation is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to fostering a workplace that values respect, professionalism, and inclusion. Employment decisions are made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status under applicable law.
