Senior Payroll Specialist

Primary Purpose Provides support to the department with fiscal administration processes; acts as liaison between departments to adjust or reconcile financial transactions. This position works under minimal supervision and relies on experience and knowledge to plan and accomplish goals. No Essential Job Functions Assists with the responsibility of successful completion of the steps in the BANNER/Kronos payroll cycle, including data entry, maintenance of alphabetical database, printing and distribution of paychecks, auditing data input by HRIS and file backups to ensure that payroll is processed accurately and in a timely manner. Extracts information from various forms to update employee's personal information, pay, tax, deduction, allocation, and banking records with BANNER via appropriate computer screen to ensure accurate payroll calculation. Audits payroll pertinent data after entry by HRIS department and other payroll representatives into BANNER to ensure accurate processes and record keeping. Assists less senior employees in carrying out their job duties to ensure work is completed on time. Researches and corrects complex errors and discrepancies using experience and logic to ensure accurate processes and record keeping. Updates and reviews activity needed to facilitate the unclaimed property process. Updates and reviews activity needed to facilitate the tuition waiver process. Performs other duties as assigned or required. Job Requirements Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Intermediate knowledge of MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and Outlook), automated office equipment, and office practices and procedures (e.g., filing, answering telephones, receptionist duties, and supply/equipment ordering). Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Excellent customer service and communication skills. Proactive, punctual and reliable. Data entry skills. Ability to handle a high volume of transactions. Detail oriented. Maintain strict confidentiality of department and University information gained/exposed in the course of fulfilling job duties and responsibilities. Physical Requirements / Working Conditions Ability to communicate effectively with others. Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues and supervisory staff at all levels. May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils and computer keyboards. Required Education High School Diploma or Equivalent Required Experience High School Diploma and four (4) years of experience in accounting or related field. --OR-- Associate's Degree and two (2) year of experience in accounting or related field. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's Degree and one (1) year of experience in accounting or related field. Working knowledge of Banner and Ariba. Is this a safety sensitive position?
