The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities
Performs Nuclear Medicine and PET CT studies, which require theoretical insight and experience. Exercises complex skill, judgement and knowledge of the principles and methods of the Nuclear Medicine field.
Minimum Qualifications
- Certified as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (CNMT) by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or registered as a Radiologic Technologist (RT) and certified in Nuclear Medicine (NM) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
- CT registry required within 1 year of hire date.
- Maintains current NYS licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.
- 1-2 years' experience preferred.

Systems:
- Medical record (eRecord), PACS, Radiology Information System (RIS), patient transport, communication systems, web paging, telephone/fax, printers.
Equipment:
- Wheelchairs, Stretchers, Patient beds, Medrad Injector, patient transfer assist devices (slider boards, lifts, hover mats), Point of Care Testing (POCT).
- Nuclear Medicine imaging equipment, gamma counters, electronic instruments, recorders, computer equipment and other equipment of similar scope and complexity.
Typical Assignments and Responsibilities
- Properly sets up equipment, positions patient, and determines proper acquisition parameters in order to produce a high-quality Nuclear Medicine study. Able to effectively work in all areas of Nuclear Medicine including Radiopharmacy, Quality Control and therapies. 25%
- Translates Nuclear Medicine electronic orders to verify patient name, date and appropriate exam. 25%
- Ensures proper imaging techniques related to patients age and ability to understand procedure (sight, hearing needs, ability to cooperate) to ensure image quality is successfully obtained. Reviews patient information and interpretation of data to confirm an appropriate plan and intervention specific for age related needs and provision of care. 20%
- Maintains patient record keeping by properly using the current electronic scheduling and imaging archiving programs. 20%
- Maintains appropriate inventory of supplies in the Clinical Nuclear Medicine rooms. 5%
- Assists with the training of new Nuclear Medicine Technologists as needed. 5%

- Independently completes all required hospital mandatories including Health update, online courses and Mandatory in-service test.
- Adheres to ALARA principles and radiation safe practices at all times.
- Is aware of on-call schedule and obligations to provide coverage when necessary.
- Must be aware of the presence of electrical and radiant energy hazards and intermittent exposure to unpleasant physical conditions. Must be able to stand most of the day regularly handling light to heavy weights.
- Works independently as well as a member of a team. Knows when to ask senior technologists for assistance.
- Must have well developed verbal and written communication skills being able to interpret and provide clear instructions to the patient so that they understand the procedure.
- Must create a positive interface between Imaging Sciences and all of its internal and external customers.
- Practices appropriate infection control techniques before and after each patient exam.
Career Ladder
The three bands within this position are differentiated by level of independence, supervision required, ability to precept new employees in the use of all equipment, and the ability to lead and meet established departmental goals.
Band One: Entry Level Nuclear Medicine Technologist Technologists new to URMC Nuclear Medicine Imaging Department who require training as well as regular direct supervision or guidance from a more senior technologist. This generally involves orientation to the Departments infrastructure, policies, protocols, workflows, procedures and routines. During this period the Technologists must demonstrate an ability to progress towards proficient and competent performance of required tasks of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. Success within this band requires independent responsibility for performing Nuclear Medicine studies in a safe and efficient manner, completing all associated paper and computer documentation while providing high quality images for radiologist interpretation.
Band Two: Competent Nuclear Medicine Technologist With minimal supervision, demonstrates proficiency, consistency and competence in all aspects of job responsibilities and expectations. Able to work with student technologists to sign off on their required competencies while rotating through UR Imaging. Demonstrates consistent attention to detail when performing all imaging exams. Completes all associated paper and computer work for discharging patients from the Nuclear Medicine department with appropriate post procedure instructions.
Additional duties may include working on special projects, such as new equipment evaluations and assisting in the design of areas where clinical equipment will be installed, or assignment to departmental committees.
Band Two requires a minimum of 18 months of progressively responsible professional work experience as a Nuclear Medicine specialist in a clinical or hospital environment, with at least 6 months dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department
Band Three: Advanced Nuclear Medicine Technologist In addition to the responsibilities of a Nuclear Medicine Technologist Band Two, serves as a preceptor in the onboarding of newly hired Technologists directly orienting to equipment, imaging routines and procedures, computer programs and software, as well as departmental and hospital policies. Directly assists in the mentoring of newer Technologists by providing one-on-one assistance in conjunction with the Supervisor. Possesses subject matter expertise in several different areas of nuclear Medicine that could include, but not limited to diagnostic and therapeutic exams and clinical trials, and competently operating a variety of different vendor platforms and performing departmental QA procedures. Responsible for effectively troubleshooting issues that arise within the department and deal with accordingly.
A Band Three technologist is considered a subject matter expert in downtime procedures and acts as super-user when new equipment or programs are introduced to the department. Assists in other areas of the department when the need arises such as assignments to other Nuclear Medicine sites outside of the main department. Able to represent the department on various committees such as safety, quality, and operations groups. Takes responsibility to prepare the department and staff for NYS and TJC evaluations. Assists in advanced radiopharmaceutical regulatory policies, special radiopharmaceutical ordering, advanced radiopharmaceutical treatments and clinical trials. Assists in all aspects of ACR accreditation as well as ACR readiness. Facilitates new policies and procedures to staff. Serves as a resource to the supervisors for special projects as assigned.
Select Band Three Technologists may be designated as Leads to support operations on various shifts. Leads may either assist their shift supervisor, or in the absence of a supervisor, determine workflow and staff schedule/assignments. Leads may also provide performance evaluation input to the section supervisor.
Band Three status minimally requires 4 years of progressively responsible professional work experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in a clinical or hospital environment with 1 year dedicated to the URMC Imaging Sciences Department preferred.
To be eligible for advancement consideration, technologist must be in good standing. Readiness for movement in the bands is assessed by the Nuclear Medicine Manager and supervisor upon successful demonstration of knowledge and task proficiency
