Campus Energy, Utilities and Operations has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Director.
About this Opportunity
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Assistant Director has overall responsibility and authority for the Campus Energy & Resource Conservation division of the University of Washington Campus Utilities and Operations Department. The incumbent provides primary leadership for regulatory compliance of the Seattle campus, which includes 200+ buildings, 700 acres, and serves a daily population of 80,000.
This position develops and implements strategies to comply with Washington State Climate Commitment Act, and other environmental and safety regulatory requirements, including compliance with the Clean Buildings Performance Standards (CBPS) Program, meter monitoring and energy conservation mandates. They coordinate with outside agencies, regulatory authorities, engineers, consultants, peer institutions, city and state officials, and campus departments to fulfill daily and strategic responsibilities of UW Facilities.
Key Responsibilities
Program Operations 15%
Provide strategic planning for and management of the Campus Energy & Resource Conservation division. Works with engineers/managers/coordinators throughout campus to optimize conservation practices by building occupants.
Budget/Financial 25%
Responsible and accountable for the annual operations budget and Energy & Resource Conservation purchase budget. Develop a biennial minor works budget in collaboration with project engineers and based on knowledge and experience of the facility's construction, systems and expenses. Manage, monitor and control maintenance and repair costs in accordance with budgeted requirements. Forecast operational and organizational changes impacting maintenance program performance and costs and ensure incorporation into departmental financial plans. Ensures resources are applied consistent with organizational and identify shortfalls that may impact the success of assigned programs. Maintain appropriate cost records and reports.
Safety 10%
Responsible for safe, continuous, compliant and reliable 24/7 operations of the University’s infrastructure which is of critical daily importance to the function of all University facilities and activities consistent with Environmental Health and Safety.
Personnel 5%
Provide leadership for the Campus Energy & Resource Conservation division staff, including direct supervision of management level staff. Provide feedback to staff and assess performance, prevent and resolve conflicts, develop and coach staff, perform hiring decisions, and promote diversity. Responsible for ensuring success of these staff members in order to provide continuous and reliable operations for all the campus departments in the 200+ buildings on the Seattle main campus. Ensure that assigned staff understand and follow University of Washington, UW Facilities policies. Interpret and apply applicable policies and procedures.
Organizational Leadership and Engagement 10%
Identify and provide technical direction and leadership for major capital improvements in building energy/resource auditing program. Participate with other members of the UW Facilities Leadership Team, ensuring that operations are coordinated among the department’s various units and across multiple programs. Communicate UW Facilities mission and goals to staff and monitor implementation of initiatives within assigned areas and programs. Direct and facilitate innovative practices within assigned shops. Champion the use of Lean management principles and other industry best practices to improve efficiency and drive behaviors that are aligned with and supportive of a world class organization.
Coordination and Compliance 35%
Develop and implement directives to comply with environmental, safety, and other regulatory requirements, including compliance with energy conservation, meter monitoring and Clean Building Performance Standards (CBPS). Coordinate with outside agencies, regulatory authorities, engineers, consultants, peer institutions, city and state officials, and campus departments to fulfill daily responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, construction management or related degree program.
A minimum of eight years of management or supervisory level experience in capital management, capital development and/or energy/resource management field including responsibility for managing operations budgets.
Additional Qualifications
Ability to analyze and evaluate complex technical information and conceptualize complex operational scenarios and situations, solve problems, and make decisions under pressure.
Ability to understand, analyze and effectively communicate complex technical and financial information; excellent oral and written communication skills
Strong leadership capabilities including the ability to resolve conflicts and solve problems in complex and sensitive situations with tact and diplomacy.
Experience with, and knowledge of safety regulations, building codes, environmental agency requirements, life safety standards, etc.
Ability to effectively manage people and work effectively with people at all levels in a diverse institutional environment
Preferred Qualifications
USGBC LEED Accreditation
AEE Certified Energy Manager credential
Architectural registration or professional engineering license in the state of Washington.
Extensive experience in planning, designing, and/or managing a capital investment program in a complex institutional environment.
