POSITION SUMMARY - Vice President of Finance and Administration

The successful candidate will possess a high-level of broad financial and leadership skills and is effective at stewarding both the financial and human assets of the organization. The VP of Finance and Administration develops and drives execution of organizational strategies and actions as well as provides leadership in an ongoing assessment of organizational financial performance against both the organization's budget and its short and long-term strategy.

Along with managing the financial health of the organization, the VP of Finance & Administration models effective organizational leadership and communication. This position oversees the grants, contracts, and staff of the Education Hub and the Finance team.

The VP of Finance & Administration acts in the best interest of the organization to ensure that it complies with all financial and tax regulations, safeguards the organizational operations from financial and operational risks, and ensures that organization adheres to United Way Membership Requirements. They are skilled in financial reporting, forecasting, and trending.

As part of the executive team, this position works closely with the CEO and other VPs and establishes, under the governance of the Internal Operations Committee, the major financial objectives and policies for the organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL DUTIES OF POSITION

The successful candidate must be able to perform each essential duty listed below at a satisfactory level:

  • Builds and leads a diverse team that enables the organization to succeed. Demands high performance and results. Ensures team members' work is aligned with the United Way mission, values, and strategy. Has a strong sense of accountability for self and others.
  • Budget Management : Understands revenue recognition and accounting, business planning, budgeting, balance sheet forecasting, cash flow analysis and forecasting, capital budgeting and financial statement analysis.
  • Cash and investment management to effectively ensure availability of funds, cash flow and long-term financial stability.
  • Understands Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (standards) and Internal Revenue Code (tax) requirements and makes appropriate recommendations; Understands accounting requirements, internal control practices, taxation requirements, and public reporting.
  • Is proficient in all aspects of accounting - to include cost accounting and variance analysis, activity-based costing techniques, project accounting, fund accounting and compliance: Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  • Able to create and present financial information/reports for multiple users (internal and external) with varying needs and levels of financial acumen in a way that enables them to understand what the financial information indicates about the organization's mission execution; Understand customer needs and adequately meet those needs. Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting; oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors ; manage preparation and support of all external audits. Completes all grant required financial submissions and provides program managers with financial information as needed. Keep clean and clear records that document decision making.
  • Respond quickly to identified risks and puts teams together to uncover and address root causes; drive integration and standardization of risk management processes across the organization; understand the techniques and processes for optimizing risk taking decisions within an organization.
  • Effective Decision Making , weighs consequences before making a final decision. Ability to calculate the cost/benefit or risk/reward of various elements associated with the organization's strategic plan and then advise/act accordingly. Recognizes issues, and determines actions needed to advance the decision-making process. Consistently make high-quality decisions based upon thorough analysis and the impacts on other employees / organizations; correctly judges when to make, delegate or defer a decision to the correct party
  • Recognizes and prioritizes important business matters ; Makes clear decisions, communicates expectations on actions to move forward; Builds organizational support; Implements critical financial and operational systems and processes.
  • Has the ability to influence others' behavior toward the organization's goals; having a high emotional intelligence; Builds trust while maintaining confidentiality. Has follow-through.
  • Develops and implements policies and practices that require attention and adherence to safety/legal/regulatory practices and regulations; can create emergency response and business continuity plans; design and implement risk reporting systems and communicate to executive management risk processes and results including recommendations for improvement.
  • Contract Acumen : Understands the basics of contract provisions and legal doctrines; able to negotiate and renew insurance contracts and reviews/coordinates all significant contractual agreements (grants, foundations, vendors, leases, etc.) requiring a commitment of UWLC resources

QUALIFICATIONS

Required/Necessary Skills & Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 7 years of full charge accounting experience with proven progressive levels of responsibility.
  • Minimum of 5 years of administration and supervisory experience of professional staff
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field of study
  • Experience managing the completion of audited financial statement and 990 Informational tax returns including the execution of single audit process
  • Proficiency in interpreting and applying Federal, State, and local policies, procedures, laws and regulations
  • Principles of supervision, hiring, training, and performance evaluation
  • Ability to evaluate, develop, and implement improvements in operations, procedures, and policies
  • Microsoft Suite proficiency and accounting software acumen.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to facilitate group meetings
  • A commitment to excellence and to the mission of UWLC

Desired Skills & Knowledge:

  • CPA license
  • Fund accounting in a nonprofit setting
  • Experience with or understanding of Early Learning Hub programs, Coordinated Care Organizations, or Health and Early Learning Systems

SALARY STATEMENT

The budgeted lifespan salary range for this position is currently $87,091- $108,864 annually. Proffered salaries are determined by several factors including applicant's knowledge, skills, experience, position, equity, and market. No relocation assistance.
