Senior Accountant

Job Summary

This is a senior, ownership-level accounting role responsible for the full month-end close process, tax season readiness for SBTPG (Santa Barbara Tax Products Group) operations, and revenue-sharing contract management. This position carries process ownership, team mentorship, and cross-functional influence - setting standards and policy rather than just executing them, and representing accounting in decisions spanning Finance, Product, and Operations.

Key Responsibilities


Month-End Close & Financial Reporting

• Own end-to-end month-end close activities for assigned areas, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting and setting the close calendar and quality standards.

• Prepare, post, and approve complex and judgmental journal entries, documenting the technical accounting conclusions supporting them.

• Review work prepared by Senior Accountants, provide technical guidance, and mentor the team on close execution and accounting policy application.

• Review monthly account reconciliations and ensure timely resolution of outstanding items.

• Analyze financial results and investigate significant fluctuations, trends, and variances.

• Serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external auditors, overseeing preparation of supporting schedules and resolving audit inquiries.

• Define and drive process improvement initiatives to streamline the close and improve reporting efficiency, including automation and system enhancements.

Tax Processing Business Support & Tax Season Readiness

• Review transmitter agreements, determine the appropriate accounting treatment, and define the resulting accounting and operational requirements.

• Own annual tax season readiness for accounting, including preparation and maintenance of Transmitter Deal Sheets and alignment of stakeholders on the readiness plan.

• Coordinate with Development teams to ensure accurate system configuration based on contractual terms and business requirements.

• Participate in system testing, review test results, and provide business and accounting approvals prior to production deployment.

• Collaborate with ChRM team to create SBTPG revenue offers and validate testing results in Oracle testing environment.

• Review and validate Refund Transfer fee revenue reconciliations (RVRA) to ensure completeness and accuracy of revenue recognition.

• Lead quarterly loan loss reserve review meetings with senior leadership and business stakeholders to assess taxpayer loan portfolio performance.

• Investigate and resolve settlement clearing account items and other reconciling differences.

• Partner closely with SBTPG Payment Operations and Tax Operations teams to resolve operational and accounting issues.

• Partner closely with Reporting and Data teams to ensure the availability, accuracy, and completeness of operational and financial reports used for accounting.

• Lead the accounting evaluation and implementation of new SBTPG products, programs, and business initiatives, including technical accounting assessments and controls design.

• Establish and maintain accounting policies, process documentation, and operational procedures, and ensure adherence across the team.

Revenue Share Accounting Responsibilities

• Own the contract lifecycle from an accounting perspective, monitoring expirations and advising business partners on the accounting implications of renewals and amendments.

• Own the methodology for calculating revenue-sharing arrangements, review calculations prepared by others, and maintain supporting documentation.

• Initiate and track revenue share claims to ensure timely payment.

• Work with business stakeholders to maintain accurate contract information within ChRM.

Requirements

• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including reviewing and mentoring the work of senior-level staff and leading cross-functional initiatives

• Accounting degree; CPA or advanced degree preferred

• Demonstrated ownership of complex technical accounting areas and the ability to influence decisions across Finance, Product, and Operations without direct authority

PAY RANGE

The targeted full-time base salary for this position is $118,400 to $177,600 per year. The final compensation will be determined by a number of factors such as qualifications, expertise, and the candidate's geographical location.
