Job Description

The Workers’ Compensation Plant Representative III analyzes and manages complex and technically challenging workers’ compensation claims for a plant location, with a strong focus on high-quality customer service and effective loss cost management. This onsite role serves as the primary workers’ compensation claims handler at the plant, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant claims handling from initial investigation through resolution.

Responsibilities

• Analyze and process complex and technically difficult workers’ compensation claims by thoroughly investigating and gathering all relevant information to determine claim exposure.
• Manage a full caseload of workers’ compensation claims, including cases of increased severity, while maintaining high standards of quality and timeliness.
• Develop and execute well-structured action plans for each claim to drive timely, cost-effective, and appropriate claim resolutions.
• Calculate and assign timely and appropriate reserves for each claim and manage reserve adequacy throughout the life of the claim.
• Calculate and pay benefits due in accordance with applicable laws and guidelines, approve and process timely claim payments and adjustments, and settle claims within designated authority levels.
• Prepare and submit necessary state filings within statutory limits to maintain full regulatory compliance.
• Coordinate vendor referrals for additional investigation and/or litigation management when needed to support effective claim handling.
• Apply appropriate cost containment techniques, including the use of strategic vendor partnerships, to help reduce the overall cost of claims.
• Manage claim recoveries, including subrogation, Second Injury Fund and excess recoveries, as well as Social Security and Medicare offsets, as applicable.
• Report qualifying claims to the excess carrier in a timely and accurate manner.
• Communicate clearly and professionally with claimants and internal clients regarding claim activity, status updates, and claim processing decisions.
• Ensure claim files are accurately and thoroughly documented, and verify that all claims coding is correct and up to date.
• Refer cases to supervisors or management as appropriate, particularly those that exceed authority levels or present unusual or complex issues.
• Serve as the primary workers’ compensation claims handler at the plant, providing onsite support and guidance related to workers’ compensation matters.

• 3–5 years of Illinois workers’ compensation claims management experience.
• Proven ability to handle a full caseload, including complex and higher-severity workers’ compensation claims.
• Demonstrated experience in workers’ compensation lost time claim handling.
• Strong skills in workers’ compensation claims analysis, investigation, and exposure evaluation.
• Proficiency in calculating and managing claim reserves throughout the life of a claim.
• Ability to accurately calculate and process benefit payments, claim adjustments, and settlements within authority limits.
• Experience preparing and submitting state filings within statutory and regulatory timeframes.
• Knowledge of cost management and loss cost control techniques specific to workers’ compensation claims.
• Strong communication skills for interacting with claimants, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
• Solid organizational and documentation skills to maintain accurate, well-coded claim files.
• Ability to work independently in a plant-based environment while managing competing priorities.

• Experience with workers’ compensation claims in the Chicago or broader Illinois market.
• Background in office administration related to claims management processes.
• Familiarity with coordinating vendor services for investigations and litigation support.
• Understanding of subrogation, Second Injury Fund recoveries, and Social Security/Medicare offset processes.
• General knowledge of cost management strategies and their application to claims operations.
• Willingness to work onsite and collaborate closely with plant personnel and internal clients.
• Formal qualifications or certifications in claims management or workers’ compensation are welcome if available (qualification details to be determined).

This is a plant-based, onsite position working five days per week at the facility. The role operates in a professional office setting within a plant environment, requiring frequent interaction with plant personnel, claimants, and internal stakeholders. Work involves extensive use of standard office and claims management systems to review documentation, process payments, prepare filings, and manage vendor relationships. The environment emphasizes strong customer service, accuracy, regulatory compliance, and effective cost management in handling workers’ compensation claims.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of Chicago, IL.

The pay range for this position is $33.11 - $33.11/hr.
