Position Type: Teacher – Secondary/Health/PE Date Posted: 4/28/2026 Location: Downingtown High School West Date Available: 08/12/2026 Job Summary To develop in each pupil an understanding of the relationship of good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil’s ability and the standards set forth by the school district. Qualifications Graduate of an accredited college or university Valid Pennsylvania certification in PK‑12 Health/PE Demonstrated knowledge in the area of assignment Positive attitude toward teaching and service to the district Proficiency in use of current technology for instruction or communication Ability to flex and vary hours to accommodate student, parent, and teacher needs Effective interpersonal skills with teachers, administrators, parents, students, and outside organizations Excellent classroom management skills Effective communication skills and ability to follow directions Good judgment, planning, and human relations skills; able to work under stress Adherence to PA Code of Professional Practice and Conduct for Educators Completion and maintenance of all federal, state, and local background and criminal record checks Adherence to all local, state, federal, and school code requirements for employment Duties & Responsibilities Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, and individual, dual, or team sports, using the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program Analyze, demonstrate, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible May teach Physical Education classes for handicapped pupils, interscholastic athletics, or drill team Provide appropriate safety instruction and perform safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure overall safety of pupils Maintain control of storage and use of school‑owned property Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas Evaluate each pupil’s growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution in team sports Maintain professional competence through in‑service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self‑selected professional growth activities Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method of evaluation in conformance with district guidelines Select and requisition uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintain required inventory records Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems Supervise pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned work day Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities Perform other duties as many, from time to time as assigned by the supervisor Schedule 7.5 hours per day based on district‑approved calendar; up to 191 days per year plus up to 3 days of orientation for new employees.
