Role Overview :


This position serves as an accountant for the accounts receivable department and is responsible for the timely and accurate creation of billing and collection of invoices due to INDOT. This position is responsible for initially analyzing billing requests for accuracy of submittal, creation of invoices, creation of customer profiles, follow-up with billing requestors for additional information, and organization of billing documents for long-term storage. The accountant is also the primary person who handles incoming phone calls for the accounts receivable department and performs collection on past due invoices by sending letters or conducting follow-up phone calls and emails. This position helps with additional accounts receivable job duties which may include issuing receipts for payments, opening and sorting mail, logging payments in the agency cashbook, adding checks, organizing deposits to be submitted to the Treasury of State office, and taking payments over the phone, researching where payments should post, organization of deposits for long term storage, and other duties as assigned.

Salary Statement :


The salary for this position traditionally starts at $42,900.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Advise the supervisor of the status of all accounts.
• Assist management in the preparation of agency or program area budget requests.
• Develop and recommend implementation of new accounting methods and procedures pertaining to this positions' area of responsibility.
• Advise program staff on accounting matters relating to specific program funding.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of general policies for a fiscal program.
• Coordinate use of the computerized accounting system for the program area.
• Certify the accuracy of financial records and accounts.
• Analyze and interprets financial statements and reports.
• Control the flow of appropriated funds.
• Reconcile complex discrepancies between accounts.
• Interact with, and respond to, state and federal audit representatives.
• Make necessary adjustments to close books.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

• Thorough knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of public accounting.
• Thorough knowledge of federal and state accounting laws, policies, and procedures.
• Thorough knowledge of agency organization and function.
• Thorough knowledge of automated accounting systems.
• Ability to solve relatively complex accounting and budgeting problems.
• Ability to develop accounting methods and procedures to meet agency needs.
• Ability to assist in budget preparation.
• Ability to prepare and interpret financial statements and reports.
• Ability to reconcile discrepancies in accounts.
• Ability to develop effective work relationships.
• Effective communication skills.
