Software Research and Development Engineer

Position Overview We are searching for a motivated and talented Software Engineer to join our Comprehensive Software Solutions (CSS) Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State. CSS applies a wide variety of software concepts, techniques, and languages to solve challenging problems for ARL’s sponsors as well as internally for ARL needs. ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply. Responsibilities Work closely with a team to develop applications to best fit project needs. Maintain version tracking and code documentation. Support field testing - including remote or in-person troubleshooting of software systems. Rigorously test application and write unit tests, if required for the project. Required Skills & Experience Programming in C/C++, C#, Java, or Python. Use of version tracking tools - Jira, Git. Creativity in problem solving. Strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication and presentation skills. Preferred Skills & Experience Degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science. Embedded software development. Graphical user interface development. Current eligibility for access to classified information at the TS/SCI level or higher; may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility if required. Location & Travel Your working location will be fully on-site in State College, PA. This position may also require periodic travel to remote locations in support of testing. Education, Experience & Certifications Recruitment as Research and Development Engineer - Software (ARL) - Intermediate Professional: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science plus 2+ years of relevant experience. Recruitment as Research and Development Engineer - Software (ARL) - Professional: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science; no prior relevant work experience required. Required Certifications: None. Background Checks and Clearances Employment with the University will require successful completion of background checks in accordance with University policies. Employees must be eligible to obtain a government security clearance, participate in the ARL drug testing program, and comply with electronic and physical monitoring requirements applicable to federal contractors. Personnel must be U.S. citizens. Salary & Benefits The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $92,100.00 - $174,708.00.
