Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical-Surgical/Telemetry Duration: 16 Weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 2 Years Minimum License: Valid Nursing License Required Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) Must-Have: Telemetry Interpretation Telemetry Monitoring Administering Chemotherapy Description: The Medical Oncology unit cares for all solid tumor cancers throughout the spectrum of their cancer journey. This includes new diagnosis, treatment, and assistance with the transition to end-of-life care. There is a heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls. Staffing ratios aim for 1:4, with a possibility of 1:5. Weekend shifts are variable based on unit needs. Self-scheduling requests will be accepted to consider preferred schedules before finalizing. The first week of orientation will include day shifts, followed by 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor. The most common patient diagnoses include breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer, and esophageal cancer. Patients cared for include adults and geriatrics, and the daily census averages 36 patients. Participants must have experience handling various medical-surgical issues. The unit requires floating to other medical-surgical oncology units as needed. Special equipment utilized includes telemetry monitoring systems and infusion pumps. Candidates should have experience managing and accessing ports, administering blood products, starting and maintaining IVs, and understanding isolation precautions.
