Hospital Assistant

Ward 86, a renowned HIV Primary Care Clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, is actively seeking a compassionate and highly motivated individual to join our team as a Hospital Assistant. In this impactful role you will provide exceptional care and support to a diverse patient population, working under the supervision of the Practice Manager and in collaboration with medical providers, nurses, and other health care professionals. Responsibilities Obtain vital signs for patients, including height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, pulse oximetry, and respiratory rate, and enter the data into the electronic medical record system (Epic). Conduct health screenings and collect demographic information, entering all data into Epic. Prepare exam rooms before, during, and after clinic sessions and maintain supplies and equipment, reporting malfunctioning items to the charge nurse. Assist with patient flow during clinic hours, room patients, and monitor the waiting room. Transport patients and specimens within the ZSFG campus as directed and according to schedule. Conduct outreach phone calls as directed and assist with patient intake when needed. Administer vaccinations in accordance with hospital policy and under the direction of registered nurses or medical providers. Prepare and scrub patient charts in Epic, identify outstanding health‑care maintenance items, and close out any gaps according to protocol. Set up and clean up equipment and supplies for specialty clinics such as Anal Dysplasia, Gynecology, Infectious Disease, Pulmonology, and Cardiology, following each clinic’s specifications. Assist medical providers during specialty clinic sessions and help maintain the log of delivered and received equipment. Perform phlebotomy, including venipuncture and specimen collection for blood, stool, urine, saliva, and mucosal samples, following hospital policies and safety procedures. Manage laboratory equipment, inventory supplies, and maintain daily lab activity logs as required. Ensure timely transport of STAT and routine specimens to the laboratory and perform point‑of‑care testing and calibration as directed. Restock and maintain exam rooms, monitor equipment functionality, and keep the clinic orderly throughout the day. Monitor Epic work queues, handle fax and electronic signature orders, and perform other administrative functions as assigned. Maintain supply lists, identify low stock, place orders, and keep a log of deliveries. Perform any other duties as assigned by the Practice Manager or supervising staff. Required Qualifications High school graduation and three years of appropriate experience, including one year of supervisory experience where applicable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within three months of hire. Excellent phlebotomy skills. Strong organizational skills, detail orientation, and the ability to set priorities and follow through on assigned tasks. Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the job responsibilities. Basic mathematical and computational skills. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a busy, team‑oriented environment. Physical ability to push or pull 50 pounds or greater while performing patient transport (wheelchair) within the ZSFG campus. Preferred Qualifications More than two years of experience working as a medical assistant. Graduation from a medical assistant program. Prior experience working in a primary care setting. Experience working with patients living with HIV/AIDS. Fluency in Spanish and the ability to communicate effectively with monolingual patients. Familiarity with electronic health record systems, Microsoft Word, and Excel. Required Certifications Active and verifiable California Phlebotomy Technician Certification (CPT‑1). Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or obtaining BLS Certification within three months of hire.
